I was excited to try this place 😳but it was a big disappointment. I tried the chicha morada first, I mentioned to the waiter that it was very sour and bitter but instead of apologizing and offer something to replace my drink he said ā€œNo it’s not bad, the drink is fresh and it’s sour because they added too much lemon, here’s the menu if you want to order a different drinkā€œ he then turned around and left…… he didn’t attempt to apologize and instead he gave me an attitude…. I ordered a Arroz con mariscos and it had enough seafood but the rice they used was a broken rice instead of a decent one…. We also ordered picarones (see picture) and it was burnt and the dough had no flavor 😱 but the bus boy was more attentive and had a better attitude than the waiter.

What a surprise! I never knew that this restaurant existed! Ive been eating on West Portal for 15 years and going to Peets (3 doors down) and the hardware store since .... 2002? I never saw this place. Well, my wife was in the mood for Peruvian food. I suppose it's because we just returned from Machu Picchu a few months ago. I was like..... "where are we going?" I didn't know what to expect nor was I expecting much when I arrived. After all, just a few months ago I was eating amazing Peruvian food. I was surprised at the quality of the food. Not only was it delicious, but it was presented beautifully. The restaurant is very nice and clean. The staff is professional and courteous. It was the perfect evening.

Such great food here! I liked almost everything I tried. Starters were ceviche with a side of fried plantains, beef empanadas, and crab cream-stuffed tequenos. But the star of the show was the pescado a lo macho, a whole fried fish with delicious, creamy seafood stew and rice, which I would have devoured entirely if I hadn't mistakenly stuffed myself with appetizers. The paella was good as well, and a lot of things coming out of the kitchen smelled amazing. Prices for entrees are high, but the servings are also large, so you can split with someone or eat for a couple of meals. Definitely a good spot with good service if you are craving a tasty meal from the other side of the world.

I know my rating doesn't make any sense, as overall I was pleased with the food, the service, and the place in general. But here is where it went south quickly - the person who was cleaning our plates away started to lose his balance of the plates, and ended up spilling a syrup and a sauce from one of dishes. He almost lost a plate to the hard, ceramic tile floor, but I caught it in time as it was slipping out from the other plates. The syrups and sauce spilled onto and down the sleeve of my relative's coat. The employee said I'm sorry, which is fine. Accidents happen. I totally get that, and not a reason to hate a place or give them a bad rating. It's what happened next that earned the demotion - absolutely no attention to compensate for the incident, including no clean up. Not only was there no compensation for the spill in the form of, say, a discount off the bill, or a complimentary dessert or SOMETHING, the spillage that was on the floor directly behind us STAYED on the floor for the next 20 minutes while we were still at the table. When the spill happened, there were no other patrons in the restaurant, so you can't make the excuse they were too busy or short staffed. A group of four people came in before we left that had to walk past that mess on the floor. We had to step around the mess so we didn't step in it as we left. My relative spent 5 minutes in the bathroom cleaning her jacket in the bathroom, and couldn't wear the jacket because it was too wet where she had to clean it. The people in charge had plenty of time to decide to fix this whole situation, but - nothing. Shame on them. Bad customer service. Fix that, and you'll have...

There are a lot of different factors that effect the overall score - it could be i ordered all the wrongs things. You don't order pizza, at a mexican restaurant right? I think this is what happened tonight, considering that people praise this place. I will give it the benefit of the doubt that i just ordered the wrong items.

The restaurant is self is tiny but really nice and cozy like most places in west portal. The staff was fast, nice and attentive. No problem at all!

So i ordered the civichƩ. The waitress suggest one for me and i ordered a side of plantain chips as well. Like some people who tasted the civiche they either thought it was too sour/limey or delicious. I love lime and acidic foods, but this one like drinking lime juice and fish. Love the seafood and the nice touch of spice, but way to much acid. Take that statement with a grain of salt or their civiche (bad pun).

The plantain chips were inconsistent. Some were thin and crispy while the other half was thick and old.

I normally get scared to try something else when i already had two strikes out and all the entrees were over $25. So i went on the safer side - steak salad. The salad was pretty normal stuff. i could make it at home - fajita style steak placed on a bed of greens with vinaigrette sauce.

Overall i had an OK experience, nothing bad enough that i would scare people away from here, but i wouldn't mind coming back to try another thing...

Peruvian Food that is always a treat!!

I came to this location for over 20 years for La Fresca Peruvian food and I had not realized it had changed owners. I found out the new owners had ties to La Fresca and still served a very similar menu, so it was easy for me to give this place a try. I loved La Fresca and was introduced to Peruvian food from their menu.

I would say the transformation was a great success. I had my usual Lomo Saltado and it was equal to what I expected. I have since eaten that dish in many other cities where I have found Peruvian restaurants, including Barcelona and Seattle, San Jose, and Phoenix. The version here at Franco's is equal to the best I have ever eaten, and maybe even exceeds my expectations... my waiter customized my plate with more cilantro, so that made it even better for me... :)

The others in my party were equally happy with the seafood stew and my wife loved her chicken fajita. We had a couple appetizers and cold beers to make the evening dining experience a delightful night out. This place still gets top marks for the new ownership, and I will certainly return next time I am in...
