Gourmet Kitchen just several doors up north to socially popular Good Mong Kok Bakery on the bustling Stockton street in Chinatown is the bang-for-your-buck lunch place while working downtown or nearby. In addition to a variety of traditional Cantonese-style dim sum the best bargain in my view is its signature $8 three items lunch over plain or fried rice (or noodles) including fried shrimp, steam-fried fish (Tilapia), sweet sour pork, pork ribs, pork stomach, as well as a variety of vegetables including cauliflower, green beans, bok choy, eggplants, mushroom, broccoli, etc. Also, it’s steamed pork veggie buns (菜肉包子)are really tasty, only $5 for a total of 3 or 4. However, imhv avoid its Congee of Thousand-Year-Old eggs with shredded pork(皮蛋瘦肉粥) because its plain and not enough ingredients inside. The location also has a few tables for customers to sit down for a quick bite, which Good Mong Kok Bakery does not have. It's an affordable ideal location for a takeout lunch box in Chinatown with easy access to Muni lines 1, 8, 30, 45 and T line. Under the current economic circumstances finding an affordable lunch place with real food (of course not every day) not a mere popular yet inflated name is imperative yet smart to survive financially...
Read moreFound this when we were cruising atound chinatown. This shop was not that crowded but there were a couple of customers inside. There are many shops like this in chinatown. It has a great selection of chinese dishes. It varies from dimsum, chinese donuts, pork, noodles, and othes. You can pretty much buy food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The price is also reasonable and considered cheap. The workers were very friendly but some customers were seem impatient. Some customers came after us and just wanted to be served right away. Good think the worker asked who is next. We ordered chinese donuts, the sweet donuts, and the ones that usually have beans inside. We also ordered char siu pao( baked bbq pork bun) . Iwe brought the the order to another restaurant and had the donut there. I wish the donut was warm. It is also a bit chewy. The only place I can find a fresh kind of donut from fryer is at a chinese restaurant. The donut tastes good. I will try other stuff later. You should give it a try when you are...
Read moreI didn't have any specific plans to dine here: I was just roaming around Chinatown and happened to see this outlet. It's a very small place and is more popular for takeaways as opposed to dine-in. Having said that, there are about 4 small tables with chairs available and a couple of them were occupied. I also managed to find a seat once my order was ready.
I had a quick look at the items displayed there. There were some items that I didn't understand, so to play it safe, I ordered fried rice and chicken (it looked like a Manchurian recipe with the cornflour coating). For toppings, I just chose stir fried green beans, although there were many others to choose from. The cost was around $10 plus tip (specifically requested via the POS unit) although there wasn't any table service as such.
The portion size was huge and I struggled to finish it. The taste was OK (mediocre): nothing extraordinary. I would probably give this outlet a miss if I'm back in Chinatown on my...
