Righto, this is an 'interesting' part of San Francisco (or is it all like that?) but it is somewhat close to everything (except perhaps the BART station which felt like a bit of a hike on the way in and out, since I wanted to keep public transit connections to a minimum). I checked in after 11pm after passing through the security buzzer entrance downstairs, so that was interesting with the security cameras and all - but I guess that made it safe? 24-hour desk up the stairs, so I suppose any issues should be able to be resolved. Check-out is normally around 11am, but having called earlier, I was granted a 12-noon checkout so there's that. Luggage storage was charged at $5 per suitcase though payable by cash-only so that seemed a little odd but whatever, maybe it's a San Francisco thing. The other reviewers aren't making it up - the floor in my room (2nd floor) was sloped at the window, sink & mirror was situated in the corner of the room and not with the toilet and shower so felt a little bit weird/budget. Area around the sink was also wet when I arrived despite checking in so late so that made me wonder about the staff's attention to detail. Toilet roll dispenser was more like a stub in the wall (see pic) so that was kind of amusing but of no ill consequence (but the roll wasn't a new one so I had to request an extra). Just lacklustre all-round for things that shouldn't be difficult - they're not super important things, but they signal a lack of care in general. Anyway, the bed was comfortable enough and with earplugs to block out the noise from the nearby nightclubs and random chat, sleep was still easy enough for me. The staff were decent to deal with but compared to other stays on my trip, I had the feeling that they just wanted me quickly in and out in hope I'd make no complaints. Water from shower at 10:30 in the morning was only lukewarm though, so I wonder what it'd be like in winter. It wasn't *bad* bad, and I felt it was safe and clean enough (for me), but I do wonder why I didn't spend an extra $50 or try for a slightly further-out area where maybe the value might have been somewhat better. If you're in San Francisco for one night, you can afford something better. If you're here for more nights, you have time to stay somewhere further out or find someplace better. Oh one more thing - the WiFi was practically not working at all for me and I don't think it was a problem on my end. They photocopy your ID too when you check-in - other places I stayed at did not do that.

Update: After my second stay, I'm already planning my third. I'd like to reiterate the need to bring earplugs but everything was perfect outside of the noise. Extremely clean. I was hesitant to book here after looking at some older reviews, but it was a perfect stay for my boyfriend and I. The room (w/ queen and private bath) was small, but it was extremely clean and had everything we needed (fridge, dresser, hangers, soap). It looked like fresh paint and new floors, so there's a chance it's been renovated recently. The people running the place were very kind and but not around to help out, though we had no issues. You probably want to bring earplugs though because the walls are a little thin and also the area is lively at night. The location was the best part--nestled right in between Chinatown and Little Italy/North Beach, and at most, a 20 min walk to all the piers/Embarcadero/Fisherman's Wharf/Ferry Building, Lombard St, Coit Tower, Union Square, etc. Everyone recommends Tony's pizza and that was a 5 min walk from Europa. A nearby Cafe Trieste is where most of The Godfather was written. No concerns for safety in the area before midnight as it is very lively--there were plenty of people out and about on the weekend in all the homey little bars and restaurants. Thanks for a great stay! We can't wait to come back.

I come on a budget.. to SF to see and experience SF outside of a hotel room.. I don't need 5-star comforts.. I am low maintenance .. I don't careless if the bathrooms and toilets are shared..as long as they are available & clean (always are every time I go) and have TP (always do) The bed is comfortable (very) when you're up and about the whole day.(or night) this small set up is in the thick of activities ..it's where Lil China meets Lil Italy in the day.. the next street back is deserted in the night..it's where Colombus meets Broadway.. I walk out of regular ordinary doorway.. and there is Mexican food, Chinese, Indian, Italian n more within walking distance. . there's adult entertainment .. I just need a place to drop n keep my stuff n sleep wen I am tired.. Europa is where I can do that.. no fuss.. From my room.. beautifull street view .. day & night

I don't know what people expect paying a great low price in a great location... obviously this isn't going to be a four star hotel... the price was great, the location is right in the middle of Little Italy and near Chinatown. For the price and location there was nothing wrong with service and room.

Right next door is a pizza place, and a mexican burrito place. Just a small walk down are nice Italian Restaurants for a fancy dinner. The cross streets are basically where Little Italy meets Chinatown. The room is nothing all that great, but if you're going to San Francisco how much time are you really planning on spending in the room?

The bed isn't too comfortable, the bathroom is shared, there are adult entertainment venues nearby which make the surrounding area a little loud. If you're a light sleeper, or plan on traveling with children, this might not be your place. I would suggest this place if you are traveling alone, are not high maintenance, do not have a high maintenance girlfriend/boyfriend, or are willing to trade off some things for a great price.

I gave it five stars because: We (GF and I) spent a whole weekend there, mostly walking up and down Little Italy, Chinatown, and the surrounding areas. The location is amazing. You're in the middle of everything, and local BART takes you to everywhere else in the city. The price was also amazing and from looking around, cannot be beat. Even with the tradeoffs (noise, shared bathroom) I enjoyed the trip and price so much I stayed here yet again about two...

Warning warning warning!!! I literally have nothing but horror to report. The management is pathetic and highly unprofessional. The filth was unbearable. While complaining to the front desk@12am about the dirty sheets, i was argued with & told there were no available clean sheets. In that moment of insanity, a cockroach climbed up the wall 6inches from my face!!!! I screamed in rage and horror and he actually tried to blame it on the trash in the corner!!!! I was disgusted and stranded being it was a Holliday weekend. I demanded a refund and he laughed at me. I stomped off exhausted. In the morning after no sleep due to the local residents late night rendezvous and screaming from other guests. I attempted to use the ladies room where i was greeted by the janitor who was on his phone attempting to clean. I politely asked him if I could use the facility? He barely looked up and used a hand gesture ushering me in. Confused i again politely asked him if he would mind stepping out although there were stalls I didn't feel comfortable with him standing 2ft from me whileI handled my business. He became aggressive and rude .raising his voice he told me No, you can wait 5min or go upstairs! I was literally stunned and pissed and demanded he get out and fast! If this is not enough I also woke up with a skin rash, no joke! I was mortified. Please please please don't waste...
