I had an incredible lunch here, so much so I came back for dinner a few days later and had a much less impressive experience.

My apologizes for not having the exact dish names here, for some reason their online menu is unviewable when they aren't open.

I'll start with the lunch because it genuinely was very good. I had the bacon wrapped mochi and a tuna katsu to start, and then a bowl with sushi rice and marinated tuna sashimi and a simple sushi roll. All were great, came out pretty quick.

Dinner was disappointing in comparison. I was alone at the bar, not crazy busy. To start, my ($12!) non alcoholic drink never came out, and I didn't even get water until after I asked a staff member other than my waiter after I had been served both of my appetizers and really needed something to wash down the spice of the bacon wrapped mochi. I really came back for the tuna bowl I had for lunch, but couldn't find it anywhere on the menu. I got the ahi tuna dinner which I thought would be similar, but it was nowhere near as good. The rice at lunch had like the rice vinegar they use in sushi which tasted great, this rice was just plain. The tuna, which was seared instead of raw this time just wasn't flavorful at all and honestly kind of gummy. I left with half the rice and a couple slices of tuna still there.

I don't know how much the lunch was, but dinner was $30 before tax and tip (without the drink). Speaking of the drink, my server apologized when he read the receipt before handing it to me and realized I never got it, but didn't offer anything besides taking it off. Although I'm just looking at the receipt now and I think they took off my miso as well which was nice but they didn't tell me.

Anyways, I do think this place is decent- just not sure if I would come...

This review marks the first time I’ve ever submitted our unfortunate experience at a restaurant. We ate at Moshi Moshi last night, June 17. We were greeted and seated very quickly even though we did not have a reservation. Our many past experiences at this restaurant have been great but not this time. We are seniors and have a not so pleasant time reading the menu on our cell phones so we kindly asked for a hard copy of the menu. We were told that they did not have one even though it’s posted in the outside window in front. We are frequent diners in SF and have never been refused a menu. All it takes is to copy a few of them to hand out upon request. There was a female server who spoke so loudly, even to customers from across the restaurant. That was annoying but OK. My hisband ordered a chicken dish with rice and onions it was awful-mushy, watery and basically unfit to serve...also with a hefty price. We explained this to our server and was told that it is an authentic Japanese dish that many favor. She did not offer a substitute, just made us feel we were wrong My husband's anticipated great meal time was extremely disappointing and we felt very awkward by this communication. After paying a very pricey tab (including tip), a nice manager type gentleman asked us how meal was and he listened to our complaints. We felt felt let down, short changed, and it affected our entire stressful evening . We will not patronize this...

I realized this after the fact, and I should've caught it on the spot. I ordered the karaage dinner set, and upon arrival I visually noticed that the chicken was not the japanese style "chicken karaage" with the typical light coating. Upon eating it, it didn't have the characteristic flavor (you'll know if u eat enough karaage). But, I was in the middle of a convo catching up with a friend so just didn't think too much of it.

The breading was similar to supermarket frozen chicken nugget reheated, and there was no flavor at all. Usually karaage has enough "saltiness" to stand on its own. This was nothing of the sort.

Later my buddy was like "I can't help but think how mediocre the food was." By then I had forgotten the meal. But just out of curiosity, I looked at online photos of the same dish I had and yeah, what i got was definitely not the typical. Thought this was a bit scammy and devious. They should've explained it to me if they were going to serve something different and given me the option of choosing another dish.

Plus-side, service...

Solid neighborhood Japanese, with a little something for everybody — a wide selection of hot and cold appetizers, nigiri, rolls, noodle soups and classic entrees. Though maybe not a culinary destination, a fashionable local option frequented by Dogpatch regulars. Outdoor patio seating. Dog-friendly, inside and out. Soft Shell Crab Katsu, crunchy breadcrumb deep fry served with Japanese tartar sauce — satisfying comfort. Squash Blossom Tempura — a novel seasonal specialty, the batter, more beer batter. Shrimp Dumplings — top choice. Hamachi Kama, chargrilled yellowtail collar — excellent. Chicken Udon — solid delivery. Sun Dragon Roll, though good, the shrimp tempura batter was not as lightly crisp as hoped, the rice slightly densely packed. Inari with Wasabi special — clever and sweet. Selection of nigiri sushi, does the trick, but not life-changing. Great as a small dish izakaya, with Japanese whiskey flights a novelty.

My husband and I went here on a Saturday night with a reservation. The restaurant is easily accessible by train and very close to the Chase center. We chose to sit outside, in their outdoor patio, which has a heater and is covered. We were the only ones outside, maybe because of the rain? The overall vibe was great - it’s kind of cozy but also intimate. They really put enough thought in the details and decor of the restaurant. Everything we ordered was good. We ordered the following: - Moshi Moshi Wings, love the char taste to it except the bloody color. Server did tell us that it’s just the marinade but it’s cooked. - Unagi Bomb - Sun Dragon Roll, it has real snow crab, unagi, and tempura - Katsudon, tastes good but nothing spectacular - Pot of tea Service was good and attentive. Will definitely come back for another date night.

The best parts of this meal were the the berry yuzu soda for $4.95 (non alcoholic) but deliciously black berry-d. And the sake Kama for $8.95, which is like a salmon collar. There's a nice outdoor patio and the restaurant itself is pretty. The vegetable yaki udon for $15.95 had no flavor. It was terribly bland and overpriced. The bento combo for dinner was over priced. Prices were a bit steep. But most notably was the sedated and unhappy servers. Our server, Leena, was slow to take our order, slow to respond and slow to bring out food. After 2 prompts, it took her 20 minutes to bring out a spoon. Some of the guys would take over, but they weren't friendly either. I told him the soda was delicious and he just he couldn't care less. 3-4 stars for the fish collar and soda. 1 star for everything else, esp service.
