California Fish Grill — Restaurant in San Jose

I've been to two other California Fish Grills in the bay area and this one is perhaps slightly sub-par, but it may have been a soft opening and they're working the kinks out. The main thing was it took quite a long time considering it wasn't all that busy. I would still highly recommend trying them.

You will not find a better fish deal than here. Basically $12-$20 for a grilled fish with side. And our tilapia and branzino were pretty good. Garlic butter sauce is best for me, but I realize it has more calories than cajun rub or olive oil. The rice is good and I also like the zucchini with rosemary. Fish taco was very good!

You can order at the kiosk or with a person; I don't have a data point to say which is faster. Parking is a pain here because it's in the Costco Business lot and there's an incredibly busy place right next door.

August 2025 update: Came back again after the soft opening was completed. And they definitely improved their efficiency. The good was better this time too! Bumped them from 3 to 4 stars. Branzino is always so good and you get two pieces; such a good deal! But my fav are the grilled Baja tacos. I could eat these all day. Saw they had a deal on chips and salsa so I tried. Not bad for the price. Chips had some kind of seasoned salt...

This review is not about the food. The store closes at 9:00, arrived at 9:05 to pick up my UberEats order, I see 2 to-go orders on the counter ready to go. As I approach the front door, I saw one of the staff member immediately walk into the back kitchen as she saw me. Not to mention, the entire staff completely ignores me as I try to get their attention-standing in clear view in front of the cashier. She finally opens for me as she sees a man coming in for his order after 10 or so minutes waiting. And the girl that was in the back finally came out when we were let in. What is going on here? This is so wrong, if it is done intentionally. I know the whole team saw me and heard me as I am waving, knocking and even yelling to get anyone’s attention so I can get the food and leave! But i was ignored until the male customer arrived. Mgmt. needs to...

I ordered fish n chips, gov’nor, and as a westerly wind blows westwards, fish n chips was what I received. Was it delicious? Yes, it was. Was it served on a plate with an actual metal knife and fork? Yes, it was. The misses ordered some fish tacos, which were also presented very well and tasted delicious. I sat outside under a heat lamp with my filly, and we were very comfortable. The restaurant was clean, modern, utilitarian… just like rebuilt London after the blitzkreig. The music selection was average, but it did its job of drowning out the boy-racers on Capitol Ex pushing their 1998 Honda civics to the elusive 77mph. Someone should tell them it was just a movie.
