Golden House Chinese Restaurant – A Comfort Food Win on Santa Teresa
Golden House Chinese Restaurant on Santa Teresa Blvd in San Jose is one of those reliable neighborhood gems that delivers every time — especially when you’re in the mood for something warm, tasty, and comforting.
I ordered the chicken wonton soup, but I customized it — no chicken, just a bunch of dumplings and extra vegetables. And honestly? They delivered exactly what I wanted. The broth was rich and flavorful, the dumplings were tender and packed with savory filling, and the vegetables gave it a fresh, balanced feel. It hit the spot perfectly — especially on a chill day when I needed something easy to eat and deeply satisfying.
One small thing to note (not a complaint, just part of the experience): I tried calling ahead to place my order, but couldn’t get through on the phone. No biggie — I just drove over, walked in, placed my order at the counter, and waited about 10 minutes. Super smooth overall. I’m honestly kind of used to doing that now, and the staff is always polite and efficient.
There’s a certain comfort to spots like Golden House. They don’t try to be trendy or flashy — they just focus on serving consistently good food, quickly and affordably. And for that, they’ve earned a permanent spot on my local favorites list.
Highly recommend the wonton soup (especially with your own twist), and I’m looking forward to trying more dishes soon. Solid 4-star experience — I’ll...
Read moreSaw this restaurant mentioned amongst 2 others as home style simple good authentic Chinese food to have in my gmail feed of local San Jose news so went to try it. Author recommended Shrimp in Lobster Sauce & Mongolian Beef at this place. Located in a huge strip mall with Grocery Outlet & Dollar Tree. Huge parking lot.
Serves both Cantonese and Szechuan cuisines.
We had the lunch special (HUGE portions); -Eggplant Beef in Garlic Sauce (extra spicy), has some oil, can't be helped as eggplant retains a lot of oil. -Mongolian Beef (extra spicy) not oily at all! Both were very good, not a hint of sweetness (though adult daughter prefers a tiny bit of sweetness in her food), crunchy firm veggies in Mongolian Beef (yum!).
Angie was our very kind waitress and she was sweet.
Next time will try their Seafood Chow Fun & Filet of Sole (non breaded) in...
Read moreBeen here a bunch of times. I don't understand the prior review's mention of "cafeteria style setup" - it's not a buffet, it's a sit-down order-and-be-served restaurant. Perhaps it used to be set up like that; I don't know. Food is good and fresh, prices are reasonable. It can get busy at lunchtime - try to get there before 12:00. Soup always arrives within literally seconds of being seated. Portions are, if anything, over-generous, and I have seen people allowed to go "off-menu" if they have the ingredients. All in all a good place for lunch. Never tried dinner there.
EDIT: It can feel a little strange if you visit as a single at lunch because they will seat you at a 2-place table that is in VERY close proximity to (almost touching) another 2-place table at which other diners may be...
