Bird Dog — Restaurant in San Marcos

I was so excited to try since I heard it was coming. I ordered 6 piece box fries onion rings and also the fried pickles. Yes it was to go but I live less than 5 minutes away and I tried one in the parking lot. I will also say I am a chicken snob. I know my chicken. Let’s start with the chicken it seems to be ok Quality but did not get much Flavor. Chicken was not stringy, which is a plus. but the one thing and really with everything I tried it was not crisp at all. In fact the breading was just coming off. I will say hundred percent that’s a training issue. The food was put in too hot. I could see the melted lid. Have to let it set or it’s just gonna steam inside but again I tried this in the parking lot. Quickly, the toast flavor wise was great, but when put in the box on the very bottom of everything no longer had any crisp. Next Fries I think they may have been in the oil for 30 seconds not only limp but not Cooked zero salt and just a sad french fry. Next, we’ll talk gravy that was my choice of dip very Water down, No flavor for sure a mix. Onion ring that at first I thought these were homemade the more I think about it. I think they were frozen. They were oily or it could’ve been watery, which took all the crisp away again no salt. Lastly, the fried pickles, no fault mushy just not a lot of flavor. Staff was nice helpful When ordering the restaurant was not busy at all I went 1130 on a Saturday morning inside with clean. So overall will I come back in a town with so many chicken places it has to be perfect. This was not even in the ballpark. Perfect. I get your new, but it will be hard for me to come back so if you’ve ever seen any of my YouTube videos. I rate everything from 0 to 100 this is getting about a 30. Absolutely loved my experience at Bird Dog! This place truly stands out in all the best ways. First and foremost, the food is exceptionally good, every bite was packed with flavor and clearly made with care. On top of that, the prices are incredibly reasonable, especially considering the quality you’re getting. It’s rare to find a spot that delivers both value and taste so well.

The atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, with a chill vibe that makes you feel right at home the second you walk in. It’s the kind of place where everyone is welcome, and you can tell the staff genuinely enjoy what they do. Speaking of which, the staff were fantastic, super friendly, attentive, and just all-around good people.

I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Michael, and that really took the experience to another level. He was just as kind and down-to-earth as the rest of the team. It’s not every day you see an owner making the rounds, checking in with guests to make sure everyone’s having a great time. That kind of personal touch means a lot, and it shows just how much pride and care goes into running Bird Dog.

This was our very first time here and it was honestly unforgettable. My wife and I ordered the OG Dog, Naughty Dog, Ole Smokey Dog, and Hot Mess Dog along with a cup of elote and a cup of mac & cheese with sweet tea to drink.

Our experience was amazing. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and a can-do attitude ready to take our order (which is so rare these days) and promptly received our food a few minutes after placing our order.

The hot dog buns were toasted to perfection and the actual beef was one of the best hot dogs I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The toppings were extravagant and they didn’t skip out on making sure the customer experienced their version of a hot dog.

I’m not sure if the man working the register was the owner or manager but he came over and made sure that we had everything we needed or wanted as first time customers (unbeknownst to him).

Thoroughly impressed with our time here and will definitely be back in the future.
