Black Bear Diner was recommended to me by my best friend who lives in Northern California. When her and her husband told me it's a must try, my family and I had to try it for ourselves. We loved it from our first visit and every visit since it has been nothing short of great. The prices are reasonable for this day and age. The food is SO good! They seriously have the best hash browns I've had from any place. I love ordering their big breakfast meal AKA 'The Grizz.' It comes with ham, bacon, sausage, eggs, hashbrowns, and pancakes. It's SO worth the splurge and hits the spot EVERY time! I like getting my eggs over easy so I can pop the yolks over my hashbrowns. Then I like topping them with some of their Chipotle sauce and ketchup. The combination is chefs' kiss. It's a serious must try. Today, I went with my dad, and we both got 'The Grizz' meal, which was delicious as always. I also tried their new hazelnut iced coffee that had chocolate in it, and OMG, it was amazing! I highly recommend trying it if you love iced coffee. The service was top-notch as always. The host was so warm and kind the moment we stepped inside. There, thankfully, wasn't a wait, and she immediately seated us at a table for two. Our server immediately came to tend to us and took our drink order right away. She was so sweet and more than accommodating when we asked her for a paper cup for my dad. It completely slipped my mind that he struggles to drink from regular coffee mugs because his hands shake so we asked her for a paper cup and she immediately went and got one for my dad so I really appreciated that. This place also has some great vegetarian options for those who don't eat meat, which is great because my mom is vegetarian, so this place has something all my loved ones can enjoy. I definitely recommend trying this place at least once if you're ever in the area. Also, can I just say I love the cabin like feel to the restaurant and all the cute bear decor. It's seriously so cute!! I love it, and I love that the menus are printed on newspapers. It's so unique. I just love it so much. Can you tell? Lol I think you've gotten the point. Go and try it when you have a chance. The service is top notch, the food is delicious, and the prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food you get. Seriously, try it. You won't regret it. I, for one, can't wait to go back.

This was my first experience at a Black Bear Diner. I went to the location at corner of Bristol and MacArthur in Santa Ana. Parking can be tight but you can utilize the additional parking for the shopping center. The entrance is facing off Bristol street not off of MacArthur. The restaurant looks like a nice cabin in the woods with statues outside the door that resembles wooden carved statues of bear cubs. The inside of this adorable restaurant is decorated in log cabin and bear theme. Upon entering you'll be greeted by a cheerful rep who will take your name and get your party seated. They had a lovely back room with amazing decorations that we were seated in. The Waite staff was very attentive and seemed to enjoy their job. I felt like they were happy we choose to dine with them. That goes a long way in my book. I ordered the Pancake Volcano $13 which came with 2 eggs, 3 sweet cream Pancakes, two sausage links, and 2 thick premium pieces of bacon. The Pancakes were huge and thick. Well made though. They are a bit sweeter than other Pancakes from other restaurants. Think.. IHOP bit sweeter. The bacon like I mentioned earlier was premium. Not burnt but crispy around edges to perfection. The sausages were delicious and well grilled. I usually don't eat the sausage from restaurants because it's not appealing to my taste, but I ate both of these. Very good. The eggs were made exactly as I ordered them. It's amazing how many restaurants get eggs wrong when a customer orders. These were perfect. I asked for extra butter and syrup, I always ask for extra butter and syrup. This time I didn't need the extra syrup but I did use the butter. Oh, and the syrup is warmed. Attention to detail. When asking for extra napkins and butter, the server was quick to bring them. My wife got the Club Sandwich and hashbrowns. The sandwich was well made. Fresh tasting. The hashbrowns were exactly how I crave them, crispy on the outside easy to break the shaved potatoes. When we were ready for our "to go" box, as the portions are large and filling, she brought that quickly as well. We didn't feel rushed. When we asked for the check she politely brought it over and thanked us for visiting. Amazing, amazing service. Good food, and delightful atmosphere. I will definitely be back! Here are a few pictures from our meal and some of the decor.

One hell of a diner. This definitely beats any 'ol Dennys and, dare I say, on par with The Cut and its gourmet burgers (see below). Price, service, food are awesome. Went here on Wednesday, day before Valentine's with S/O. No wait lines, few people on a late Wednesday evening. Perfectly, conveniently romantic. The staff here are friendly and welcoming so it was a joy to just be there. We were asked if this was our first time there (which it was), and was kindly given general info about foods in the menu--which was in a cleverly-customized newspaper. As for food, I would recommend the Bacon and Cheddar Burger. And, even though the food item was not available on the menu at the time, I'd HIGHLY suggest you get the Big Daddy Burger that only exists around June (for Father's Day)! I'd say the taste is reminiscent to the umami goodness from trying a certain gourmet burger in The Cut (the key is the fried egg.. and the sauces). Otherwise, feel free to replicate it using their customize-your-burger portion on the menu: it's a burger but with double patties, onion rings, bacon, and finally a fried egg to top it off. Food quality: Perfect. For sides, their mac 'n cheese could use a little more work; it gives off the impression that its only appeal is the 'cheesy' part. Same goes for their hot chocolate as well--a bit of cinnamon and a more richer chocolate would improve it. But these are sides, so it's not that bad. Their prices are AMAZING for their food size's worth. Chicken fried steak, a good burger with a side of onion rings, hot chocolate and a Pepsi.. was about $39. I love the bear aesthetics going in throughout this diner. It's cute. Always worth the drive; they definitely deserve the tip. tl;dr: AMAZING food/service/price/quality. Nice bear aesthetics. Best go-to place for the famished on weekdays--or family outings. Newspaper menu.

I have visited this location several times. This visit warranted sadly a horrible review. I love black bear diner. This particular visit was off the charts. We placed an order from what seemed like a nice young lady. She put in one of these orders incorrectly when the item was literally read off the menu verbatim but somehow she heard pot roast instead of meatloaf. She proceeded to blame us for her inaccuracy. And claimed she would take it off the bill. Well she did but the way I understood her was that she would take off the cost of that meal for her coming at us like we were the ones that didn’t know what we were talking about. In any event this is what will make me NEVER come back. The MANAGER sexually harassed one of the waitresses her name I believe was Shasta or Sasha. He said to her yelling across to her where customers could clearly hear… “ one date just one date I’ll have you speaking Spanish… I’ll teach you Spanish baby “ he looked in our direction then Winked at us!!! That was so inappropriate. Manager never checked on us neither did the waitress so I had to go to the register to pay and ask for dessert to go. The waitresses proceeded to tell me she took off the incorrect order off the bill, as she SHOULD we never ordered no ate it was my response then she raised her hand and told me to calm down.
