Seafood Tacos in Santa Barbara--Flor De Maiz

Although I have a tremendous affinity for the tiniest of mom and pop hole in the wall places, the beauty of Flor De Maiz is not lost on me. Right across from the beach, the front patio is flanked by heaters to keep away the cool breeze off the ocean waves. At the hostess stand we were greeted with bright and friendly smiles. Once seated do not expect to find salt and pepper on your table. I think consumers in general have gotten used to seeing them but once you begin to enjoy your food here you will immediately understand why they are absent. Before I get into the meal let me begin by saying our server Djahna G was not only incredibly friendly but extremely helpful. She had some great recommendations for us. We started with the Esquites Mexicanos & the taquitos De Pato en Mole Coloradito. I really like the Esquite as did my wife but the taquitos were amazing. The crisp tortilla, the tender duck and the savory creamy combination of mole and crema was outstanding. For our main courses my wife chose the Enchiladas en Salsa verde that is served simply with green rice. I went with the Chamorro de Cerdo that came simply with refried black beans and tortillas. The shank was perfectly cooked and tender. It was easy to peel apart. It paired perfectly with the black beans , tortillas as well as the salsa verde that came with the chips. At this point we were so full but opted to order the Flan. The caramel with the mint and raspberries I have to say that recommending this restaurant is easy. It’s a great place to enjoy incredible food and friendly service.

My family surprised me for my Birthday weekend (17th is my day) with a trip up to Santa Barbara. Little Bit had seen this restaurant featured by someone on IG. The ambiance is top notch from the outdoor dining patio (with plenty of umbrellas) to the additional seating under the awnings that face the beach and including (where we sat) the interior booths and tables. Comfortable place if you have a group of 6 or more and the service was attentive and friendly. My Hibiscus Margarita was refreshing and delicious... so much so that after I down that first bad boy I ordered another! (sssshhhh don't tell nobody!) Little Bit had a Blackberry Margarita that was tasty too. For num-nums we ordered the Chicken Mole, Fresh Catch Ceviche (needed more lime or lemon in my opinion), Ribeye Tacos, Shrimp Tacos, and (for my grandson) Cheese Quesadilla. All of our entrees were good. The salsa they serve with the chips at the table had just the right smokiness to it -- SO GOOD! They had valet parking in the back of the building but it was packed when we got there (Saturday around 1:00 pm) if you go on a weekend you might try to park across the street at one of the beach lots and walk over or look for street parking. We only waited about 10 minutes for a table and the hostess was very friendly when we walked up to the podium... none of that pretentious air of "Do you have reservations?". If I ever feel like dealing with all of the traffic on the 101 or perhaps taking the Amtrak Surfliner up here again I am ABSOLUTELY returning. Respectfully Reviewed.

Living in SB we're spoiled with delicious Mexican food. I kept hearing great reviews about Flor de Maiz but waited until the last week I still lived in town, to go. I'm slightly obsessed with mole and saw that they had a mole dish, so I opted for that. My partner got a seafood taco dish. Let me quickly say, neither of them were worth the wait, nor the price. Flor de Maiz is busy almost always, and the night we went was no exception. It was incredibly noisy, but not from the people, from the music they were playing. They were blasting their music that almost every table I saw, was having a hard time hearing each other speak. We were sat at a very odd spot, it was almost like overflow seating -- separating the bar and the outdoor patio seating. Our server took quite a long time to greet us, and separately to take our order. But when she was there, she was nice enough to let us practice our Spanish. Back to the food... thank goodness we had chips and salsa which was good, because our meal was not. I was hungry enough, so I ate it, but on second thought, I should've asked them to take it back. It wasn't worth it. We left happy that we tried something new, but definitely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Save your time and money. There are way better places to go. They might be less fancy, but they're way tastier and cost less.

We were visiting Santa Barbara and heard good things about the food here. It was hustling and bustling here as soon as we walked in the door and we only had to wait about 15 minutes so it wasn’t that bad for a two person wait. I’m glad we went here! My husband wanted the octopus, and I was hesitant to have it since I’ve never had octopus before. I’m glad we got it because it was amazing! I was worried about the texture, but it was expertly cooked to achieve a perfect balance between tenderness and chewiness. It’s not rubbery or tough, but rather succulent and easy to enjoy. The octopus is typically marinated with a blend of herbs, spices, and citrus. This infusion of flavors enhances the natural taste of the seafood, creating a harmonious and memorable dish. Don’t hesitate to get this dish. We also got the ceviche and it’s a symphony of flavors that transports your taste buds straight to the coast. The food around looked all delicious, but we only got appetizers and it was plenty of food to go with our delicious margaritas. The service was great as well and they were very attentive.

So I don't go that often to Santa Barbara; but honestly, I've been asleep to how awesome it is for day trips. And I've definitely been asleep on how awesome Flor De Maiz is! My friend and I shared the salad. He had the enchilada. And I had the shrimp tacos. Now let me tell you , I am a born and raised Latino, and I have never had an enchilada or shrimp taco that tasted like it was made from home, but on grandma steroids. It was divine. I saw god that day. The enchilada sause had a hint of roasted chili in it. And the shrimp taco surprised me with a layer of cheese that was left on the skillet for too long...so it got that nice burnt Crispy taste to it. DIVINE! The cream sauce on top of the taco balanced out the acid of the limon. Must try! Also, whenever I go to a Latino restaurant, I always save the criticism of their rice and beans last. Because for me, if you can't get these staples right, you ain't doing it right. But Flor De Maiz, they did it right. The rice that came with my tacos was cooked perfectly. So trust them! Trust me, you won't regret it
