False Accusations and Humiliation Toward Paying Customers

I had one of the most disrespectful and unacceptable customer service experiences at Whatcoffee and Bakery in Santa Clara today around 3 PM.

After ordering a coconut iced latte and a pistachio croissant for dine-in, my friend and I were seated and enjoying our drinks when a staff member suddenly approached us and told us to leave. He claimed the owner believed we were "coffee competitors" spying on the business -- a completely baseless and ridiculous accusation.

We were stunned and humiliated. We calmly explained we were just regular customers, but the staff member continued to insist we leave immediately -- even though we were still drinking our beverages, which we had paid for, with a receipt clearly marked "dine-in."

We asked to speak to the owner to resolve the situation, but they refused and instead doubled down on their demand that we leave. This was not only unjustified, but incredibly rude and unprofessional. We were treated with complete disrespect, without any explanation or attempt at understanding.

Let me be clear: this kind of treatment is absolutely unacceptable. No customer should be falsely accused or publicly embarrassed in this way. I am demanding a direct apology from the owner, and a clear commitment that this type of behavior will not be repeated. This staff needs immediate training in basic customer service, conflict resolution, and professional conduct.

Until this is addressed, I cannot recommend this business to anyone. I hope Whatcoffee takes responsibility for this serious mishandling of a situation and makes the...

Wow! Don't sleep on their pastries as they are truly incredible and made fresh in house! I decided to get a box of pastries for my family because their coffee was good and I'm so so glad I did!

Each pastry was made to perfection with high quality ingredients and impeccable technique. My family and I genuinely felt like these were some of the best pastries we've had.

Here's what we LOVED: Pain Suisse: light almond cream, chocolate chunks and beautiful lamination on the pastry. You know a professional pastry chef was behind these!

Mango Filled Donuts: light, creamy and perfectly glazed

Kouign Amann: I was hesitant as the shape wasn't what I was used to but the flavor, the layers and the buttery pastry were delicious

Cinnamon Snail: simple and delightful with the right amount of cinnamon and sugar coming through

Cherry tomato & cheese tart: I could eat this everyday. I need to ask them what they put in this, but I think its a bechamel of sorts and it was so silky, savory and a perfect little breakfast pastry for those who don't want sweet.

I wish I had photos of this gorgeous box of pastries,...

Visited on a Saturday morning before 11 AM, hoping to order two lattes and a croissant. Unfortunately, they were already sold out of the ube latte and completely out of avocado for the croissant, this was pretty surprising for a weekend morning.

I don’t mind waiting, but this took forever. The kitchen seemed overwhelmed, and multiple customers had to return to the counter due to incorrect orders. Ours was no exception — we asked for iced lattes to go but received them hot and served in mugs. At $7.50 per latte, that kind of mix-up is frustrating.

To add to the chaos, they didn’t take cash, which wasn’t clearly posted anywhere. On top of that, they weren’t taking names or giving order numbers.. Instead, they just shouted out drinks and food as they were ready. It was loud, confusing, and made the disorganization feel even worse.

The staff was clearly understaffed and stressed out. It’s a real shame because the location is great, but the overall experience was poor from start to finish. I won’t be coming back, and I wouldn’t recommend...

It seems like they are in the soft opening phase, so giving the benefit of the doubt that they are still working on learning how to be efficient in making orders and processes. A little pricy for what it is, and orders take a bit of time especially considering the cost. There were a few customers that asked about where their order was and orders came out not in the order. However, they are very new so will come back again soon and edit this review! There were not very many people there, but the atmosphere was good. This seems like it is intended to be more of a brunch/lunch spot, but sandwiches are apparently coming closer to the grand opening. This does mean that they are open later than expected for most coffee shops in the morning. The pastries look really good, will have to come back. Though since this is a new place, I'm surprised that they were offering tiny pastry samples or something to get people interested and talking about their pastries.

WhatCoffee has become one of my favorite cafés in South Bay. I've enjoyed all of the drinks I've ordered so far, like the mocha, pumpkin spice latte, and coconut iced latte. The espresso, sweetness, & flavors are on-point. For food, I've loved the sweet pastries, especially the chocolate banana croissant! However I've not tried the savory options, mainly due to dietary restrictions. (More vegetarian options might be nice.) WhatCoffee does well in other aspects, too. I appreciate the bright, airy ambiance; combined with free Wi-Fi, I've had several productive "remote work" sessions. The service has so far been friendly and welcoming. Although they've only opened a few months ago, WhatCoffee has already established itself in the Santa Clara and South Bay café scenes. I look forward to their continued success.
