We were looking for dog friendly places and found this searching on Google. They have a fairly large outdoor area, picnic tables, waterfront or rather boat front. Its right next to a dock but its pretty nice. They have foliage around which adds to the scenery. Sadly there was someone working on the dock and replacing boards which for us took away from what would have been a nice serene environment. They have music playing, not too loud, just right with the volume. I honestly did not notice if there was indoor seating. I was trying to figure out how things work and reading the menu, I think there was a few hightop tables? So, this is not the kind of place to take a date if you want to impress but totally the kind of place to meet friends to hang out, the picnic tables are oversized so its good for large groups. You stand in line and order and then they bring the food out and call out a number. So not actual service, just food runners. Honestly I was taken back by them asking for tips on the payment screen. I find that rude when you provide no actual service. Tips were meant for servers who walk back and forth tending to your table, refilling drinks and getting you things. I am a very generous tipper but I do not pay tips when I do not receive service. If I order a large tackout order with many small side requests then I tip for that. They do however have flavorful food and it's hot and of fair value. We got two orders of fish and chips and one Fish Reuben Sandwich. The tarter sauce is homemade and delicious, very dilly, which works well with the fish. The Ruben was delicious the only criticism is that the bread was super crunchy. The kind of hard that damages the gums on the roof of your mouth and leaves it sore the next day. I am not sure if that is normal or if the rye was just super dried out. But it was still very good if you don't mind super crunchy bread. The slaw which was an option with the sandwich was also very flavorful, it has a Asian vibe to it. Just a touch of sweet, a touch of heat and tangy. We had enough slaw left over to create 2 sandwich wraps at home using panko crusted chicken. I pumped up the Asian vibe with a mayo with ginger, garlic, lemon and sriracha. I love when I can use leftovers to make another meal. We will go back again if we are in the area but who knows when that will be. They had several other interesting selections on the menu that we would like to try. I'm sorry I forgot to take a picture of it. If or when we go back then I will add it. Oh and be forewarned, the restrooms are disgusting! Don't go unless you need to. They are at the rear of the building next to the parking lot and could be used by anyone. ( I pray the cooks & staff have their own indoor restroom) They are unkept and gross to be honest. I have seen cleaner bathrooms in State parks. That was the only truly negative thing about the visit. Sadly after a long drive from Fairfield to SF and back to Sausalito, we all...
Read moreWe were in Sausalito picking up a car after our last Prius was totaled in an accident. We still don't know who is at fault, but the guy we bought the car from recommended we check out the food scene. Typically when we buy a car maybe miles from home we stop for lunch so that's what we did. The wife found this place. Fish. Like, with a period.
Fish.
Sustainable. She's a tree higher so this was right down her alley. We happened to come on a day that a boat show was happening so we had to park really far despite the general area having lots of parking natively. The streets surrounding were flooded but didn't prevent us from getting to the restaurant. We don't know how popular the place was but they had a decent line which we barely beat. Not sure if it is the reputation of the place or the boat show but business was jumping. This place is located next to the water and cannot be seen from the street.
Let's talk about my food. Clam chowder was decent. Not as good as monster chowder. More bacon, not as creamy and less... Punchy? But still good. I don't think I would crave it.
BAO tacos with fried fish. Fish was decent but the BAO was amazing. For those wondering, these are basically the bread from an Asian shopao or the ones that accompany roast duck. Their version was fluffy and full and awesome. You would not expect to see this at a fish restaurant but there was a theme of Asian fusion here.
Fish n chips. It was okay. Alaskan cod with beer batter and was on the puffy oily side. I prefer my FNC to be less oily and not puffy. Flavor was ok. Tarter sauce was a 5 on my 10 scale. Fries were a 4 and were really filling but not in a good way. It wasn't bad but was not satisfying. My family owned a fish n chips in the 90s so I like to think I have a palette for it.
This place seemed popular. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. It wasn't standing to me but that was in a limited sampling of 3 things. I would not go out of my way to come back but did not have a bad experience at all. If someone I was with wanted to go I would not say no. Try it and see what you think. I feel it is worth the stop in to see what the buzz may be about and if your buds might like it better...
Read moreI’ve been getting food from them for the past 1-2 years. I was very happy to find this gem at first. But over time, their option has becoming less and their price has gone up for you actually get. Today I ordered the first one on their special menu (I always like to try their special menu, it’s usually a good deal and you get something that’s not available on the regular menu) it’s description is: squash soup, smoked trout, and salmon roe and a price of bread for $20. I was visioning a small bowl of soup with a decent size trout and a few salmon roe on the side as decoration with a piece of bread. So I happily ordered it. My order was to go. After I got it in a big bag. I a small soup cup, and a small box. I assumed the small box has the trout in it. But after I opened it, it only has a piece of bread in it. So I looked through all the bags again, and didn’t see the fish anywhere. So I thought they must have missed my fish. I went back to the restaurant and asked. The guy (who looks like the new owner?) took out the small soup and pointed out there’s a small sauce container that has a few shredded smoke trout? smoked and a few salmon roe in it (half of the tiny sauce container was actually filled with pomegranates seeds that looks like salmon roe). He was like isn’t it nice? I was too shocked to say anything and left with confusion. After getting home, my husband was like: really you paid $20 for squash soup and a piece of bread? Where is the fish? I showed him the sauce container and he was like: is this a joke? What a rip off? Guess my bad was I didn’t ask for detail description when I ordered? But this leaves such a bad taste that makes us not wanting to go back! Even fancy restaurants on the main Sausalito street above the water would not charge $20 for a little bowl of squash soup to tourist. Very disappointing! It’s gone very far away from the Fish I first knew and the reasons to go there...
