First of all, I love ethnic cuisine. All of it. That said, Caribbean food has a special place in my heart. The heat, the flavor, the tenderness of the meat --.I love it. Being in town for work, I was thrilled to find a Caribbean restaurant so close to my hotel. After seeing the positive reviews, I was sold. The building is quaint. I was greeted warmly when I walked in the door. I pretty much knew what I wanted... all of it. Did I mention that I'm greedy? I settled for a combination plate of brown stew chicken and curry chicken. Then I decided to get a small plate of jerk chicken too. Greedy. The ladies were very friendly. I paid, jumped in my car and was back at the hotel in 5 minutes. Thrilled. I open the plates and thought to myself, "this doesn't look like what I'm used to seeing from the restaurant in my home town but whatever," I taste the brown stewed chicken - different. Not really a brown stew. The chicken had been breaded and fried at some point, which I wasn't too thrilled about cause I'm watching my carbs but whatever. It didn't have that deep brown, rich sauce that I had grown accustomed to. It was more of a tan sauce and kind of sweet. Not terrible just not what I was expecting. Then the curry chicken. This chicken wasn't breaded like the other. Not really much curry taste to it though. Quite salty too. No spice that I could tell really. I like spicy food and I pretty much expect Caribbean curry to be spicy. Hmm... disappointment. Good thing I got that jerk chicken! Please let it be good. It's hard to describe it really. It was a bit spicy but didn't really have much flavor. The seasoning was kind of like a layer on the top that fell off. I think they fried this chicken too. I'm used to the spices being rubbed all up in that chicken and permeating the very essence of the meat. Nope. Not this time. This jerk was only skin deep. The food wasn't bad really - light on the spices, heavy on the salt. I just get so excited at the very thought of eating Caribbean cuisine, that the let down hurts that much more. Nice staff, friendly atmosphere, average...
Read morePlease don't be fooled by the hype. I went to this spot bought some curry chicken, oxtails, and stew chicken. Now any Jamaican know when you're currying chicken you meat needs to be chopped in small pieces. This restaurant curried the chicken in whole pieces meaning the wings wasn't chopped the leg wasn't chopped and other parts. I've Never seen that before smh. When you purchase you stew chicken you are given a choice of white or dark meat I've never in my life heard of this....any Jamaican know stew chicken is just stew chicken, fried then cooked down. Ain't white or dark option with real Jamaican stew chicken. The oxtails wasn't well seasoned, was fresh and no taste.......I also purchased the red velvet cake which looked pink and the green velvet cake. It tasted as if it was sitting in the showcase for a while because it was slightly dry. There Ackee and salt fish are mad to order. I'm still trying to figure out why this spot got 4.5 star oh I know why but I'll leave that for another time. I would redo my this restaurant entire menu and make sure they have correct seasoning and do it right. Ps you don't have to have you Ackee and salt fish made to order it won't spoil, unless the only reason why they would do that because it's not many order. Oh and another thing don't be lazy and cook some real soup. You hardly get soup...
Read moreAbout 7 years ago in Washington state, was the last time I've had the warm, comforting flavors of Jamaican food. I did not grow up eating it, but there is still something about it that just grabs you by your tastebuds and your heart and tells you that everything will be okay...at least while you're eating it, lol. We had the jerk chicken, which to be honest was just a bit too salty, but still enjoyable and paired perfectly with the rice and peas and the roti. We also had the curry goat and plantains; both were incredible. Another dish we had was the ackee and salt fish. This was a first for me, so I can't say how good it was by comparison to other places, but I can tell you it had a great taste. It reminded me of really well seasoned cod and scrambled eggs. That may not sound like an appealing combination to everyone, but it works and I definitely added it to my "will buy again" mental list. We also had the coco bread (another first) and the spicy beef patties (which I would've liked to be spicier), both of which were good. The pinapple ginger and the Sorrel drinks were very fresh, both having that nice bite from the fresh ginger. All in all, you ladies at sweet spice are doing a great job and I wish you all the best. The only thing as warm and welcoming as your food, was your...
