Took a visit to Toasted Yolk Cafe on 3/20 around lunch time (11:30-12:30pm). The inside is fairly nice. For starters we ordered the chicken beignets as an appetizer. It’s served with bacon and syrup. The bacon that was was extremely spicy- the menu does show that it is candied, we just did not expect that much of a kick. The beignets were okay. I could not finish them as they smelled a little weird.

I placed an order for the two egg and cake. This came with two eggs, meat of choice, hashbrown casserole, & a slice of french toast. My food was okay, until the french toast. I drizzled syrup across the french toast- the same syrup that was provided with the chicken beignets since additional syrup was not served with my order. Instantly the odd smelled from eating the beignets returned and it ruined my entire appetite. I thought maybe it was the smell of the restaurant. After literally smelling everything, we discovered it was the SYRUP! I asked another server if there wasn’t something weird about the syrup and he informed me that there isn’t, just normal syrup. I told him my concern and he asked if he could also smell it. Instantly the same disgusting reaction! It literally smelled like the inside of a sewer. He took it to kitchen to further investigate. Apparently they serve a special Jack Daniel Syrup with the chicken beignets- we were not informed nor was “regular” syrup brought to the table.

Shrimp and grits was ordered- NO cilantro and tomatoes on the side were requested. The server wrote this down and reassured it’s no problem. Somehow, someway the kitchen still made the order as is. Since we were on a time crunch, getting the order remade was not an option (waited 25 minutes on our order). The shrimp and grits are not what you would expect, just a fair warning..

I did not enjoy my experience & it was not worth the $60 spent. Unfortunately ended up being a lot of wasted food. Our server informed us that she was new. Additional training is recommended...

If you like a lot of food, this is a good place to get plenty of it. We were seated in an area where we could not see out the windows, so I suggest asking for a window table in the back, which is better than having a view of the server's station. I had a four-egg Big Ben omelette with the hash brown casserole. The omelette was okay, as were the hash browns, but I expected more flavor from both. I once worked as a breakfast cook, and believe I could have gotten better taste out of the ingredients--and I'm not a great cook. My granddaughter who is a touch-and go-eater, which worries me, ordered French toast, which is pretty reliable for her. But the French toast here was pretty poor. She didn't like it, and I didn't either. The French toast was kind of dry in spots, as though the cook had run out of batter, or out of time to saturate the bread before cooking. The syrup was the cheap stuff, not real maple, and not very good. And worse, I made the mistake of touching the syrup container with my bare hand (how else should I have done it?), and the dispenser was gross--super-sticky gooey grossness. Fortunately my table was near the server station, so I got a bunch of napkins wet in the sink there, then returned to the table to clean the syrup dispenser. Yuck. Maybe the server should have wiped the gross goo off the syrup before putting it on the table? In fairness, I had just returned from vacation where we had breakfast at a place four days in a row that had outstanding omelettes and the best hash browns I have ever eaten. So I know it's possible. And it cost no more than this place. So perhaps I expected better, and was disproportionately disappointed. Then again, why not expect really good food? I know it...

Where to begin…

Our waitress was new and I believe she did her best. The restaurant was pretty busy, the atmosphere was pleasant, and everything was clean.

I ordered shrimp and grits, with the tomatoes on the side and no cilantro. I received shrimp and grits with tomatoes all over the top and cilantro. It wasn’t the waitresses fault, when she was placing it in front of me she recited the order exactly as it should be and took a gasp when she noticed the tomatoes, she immediately offered to have the kitchen remake it. I told her it was ok I’ll be fine. But, I wasn’t. The dish was not good to me, the taste was very off. I didn’t like anything about it, and had to stop eating it after 3 attempts.

We tried a limited edition starter item, I believe it was churro chicken. The bacon placed on top is surprisingly spicy. The dipping syrup is a Jack Daniel’s maple syrup, it’s definitely an interesting tasting and smelling syrup which was not suitable for my daughter’s French toast. We didn’t know that there were any other syrup options because we weren’t given any with her meal, so because she poured it on her toast before another waiter told us why it tasted and smelled the way it did, she couldn’t eat it.

Lastly, my son order a fried chicken salad which he had no issues with. It was huge.

For this visit, the price was not worth it but I may try again the menu...

We were on vacation for the weekend in the Savannah area and we discovered The Toasted Yolk Cafe on our way out to go home. Boy, we were disappointed to have eaten in other places, had we discovered TTYC on our first morning here. The service was great from the moment we entered the doors, the place was packed, but yet, our wait time was only 15 minutes. The atmosphere was phenomenal! The music, the cleanliness, the decorations... everything was awesome. When it came to the food, my wife & I called it: "the cherry on top" to our couple getaway. Our dishes were so flavorful, that we wiped cleaned our plates. The manager checked on us after the food had arrived and brought us condiments. Our waiter, Tanishkaa P. (Yes, we were so impressed that we noted her name) was so wonderful, she did not forget, not one thing of everything we requested and when we mentioned that the coffee was a bit too strong for our taste, she did not hesitate to make it right for us and our refill was 3/4 coffee + 1/4 hot water. The menu prices are just right for the quality of food you get. I definitely recommend this place, and we are looking forward for a location to open in/near our hometown.
