The area was cute and the staff was very friendly. I took my pastries home with me to enjoy. The highlights were: the Almond Croissant and the Ham & Cheddar Croissant. They had a buttery, flakey, crisp exterior with a tender, well-flavored interior. They satisfied my want for something sweet and for something savory. The cheddar was melty, ooey, gooey, with little bits of caramelized ham on the ends that were SO good. And the Almond Croissant had a great thick layer of almond paste along the bottom that held its own against the layers of flakey pastry -- I wanted another one of each! The items that were underwhelming for me were the Peach Danish, the CranAppleWalnut tart, and the MushroomLeekSausage Pithivier. The Peach Danish was lacking in cream cheese filling. Maybe it's just a preference of mine to have a good solid amount of filling, but it was a scant amount buried under canned peach slices (not a dig, just a statement -- peaches aren't in season right now so canned is the only option) on an acceptable pastry. It wasn't bad by any means, but I wasn't wow'ed.. it was just.. acceptable! The leek/sausage/mushroom pithivier needs salt and Seasoning! A dash of salt and pepper would go so far for this underseasoned morsel! And it was really sad because I wanted to enjoy it so much, but it was just.. meh. Beautiful presentation and great pastry with underseasoned filling is like a super attractive person with an ugly spouse.. you can't understand, so you just leave it alone. And finally, we have the Apple Cranberry Walnut tart. Once again, just lacking in that bit of pizzazz that makes you go, "Mmmm," when you bite into it. Just kind of bland again. Not very sweet, no discernable spice, just.. okay. I think that's a good way to sum up the last three dishes.. they just didn't have that little extra bit that made you go, "Mmm," when you took a bite. I might recommend tasting the fillings as they are being prepared (if that isn't happening) to make sure they are well seasoned and have that extra something special to them. All in all! I would go back for the croissants because they were REALLY freaking good. I enjoyed them throughly. They more than made up for their underseasoned counterparts. EDIT:: I have since gone back to Fresh Flours many times, and I try something new every time! Their Kouign Amonn (Sugar Croissant) and Basque Cake are TO DIE FOR. I had the KA today, and it was so crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. It is a laminated style pastry, and I think it's become my new favorite. And the Basque Cake? Oh dear God. It is so dense and rich with gently crisped edges. I highly recommend everything with a cup of rich...
Read moreIn my search for an interesting bakery near the Fauntleroy ferry terminal, I came across Fresh Flours. The founders, Keiji and Etsuko, grew up in Tokyo. Our experience with Japanese Bakeries in Yaletown Vancouver meant that we must visit this place while in the area. Having forgo breakfast, by the time we got off the ferry, we were more than ready for a bunch of the baked items. This location of Fresh Flour is smaller than we anticipated. When we entered, we thought we might have arrived at the wrong place since we could not see any of the scrumptious pastries shown on their home page. When it was our turn, the person at the order desk confirmed that they did run out of croissants... but what about the pear Danish, the peach pastry.... ??? By that time, we were too hungry to find another place to go. So, we both chose the cherry scone and ordered our respective coffee beverage. This location has a lovely sitting area at the back surrounding with a thoughtful planting of trees and plants. While we found the cherry scone a bit too sweet as a breakfast bun, the coffees were very good – with delicious microfoam. Yes, we are in Seattle – the city of good coffee drinks. We did managed to buy a croissant by the time we were ready to leave. Fresh from the oven, the croissant was good, but not better than Angus T and Bake 49 in Yaletown Vancouver. I'd love to be able to give a 5-star rating, but seeing all the pictures on the website and even on Google, and only finding cherry scone was quite a disappointment. Now I'm wondering if I should check out other locations for the pear Danish shown on the website. Hmmm, what would I find if I compared the home page photo with their online order form – would I discovered that the home page photo is stock photography??? And just what time should one show up at the bakery to see all...
Read moreI dropped by and paid about $4.50 for this savory pastry (forgot the name). They have a roomy patio to enjoy your treat. It was crispy, butter forward, great pastry flake, and (filling) very tasty/savory. It was a little expensive for the size but because of the quality, I would come back for a weekend treat once in a while. I’m not in the area often so this isn’t a regular thing for me either.
They provide hand sanitizer and also sell locally-made goods (including masks). They have seating in the back as well as out front. There is 2-hour free parking along the street which wasn’t too congested on a Saturday morning. There was a line and a short wait (15 minutes?) around 9AM.
One star off because either the customers weren’t respecting the sign of 5 persons inside at a time and/or it wasn’t enforced (or maybe the number needs to be changed). Maybe even increase the capacity ti 6 or 7. I think there should be a way for people who are just waiting for an online order or their pastry to be warmed to be asked to sit outside until they are called (or pastry...
