Came in with 6 guys after a long work day out on the water. One of our guys, who is 22 years old, and a hard working commercial diver, was asked to leave because his drivers license was the vertical version. He didn't even want to drink, just eat dinner with the rest of us. The Sloop Tavern has a policy, they do not honor vertical ID, despite it being a legal, Washington state issued ID card and he is over 21, he was asked to leave and had to sit out in the truck while the rest of us were inside. I don't know about the rest of you folks, but it's not my policy to punish everyone for the issues of a few. The waitress said the policy was because they had people who would hand their old ID to an underage friend to drink. What that had to do with our guy, I have no idea, but I have to tell you, that is the flat out most ig-norant policy I have ever heard, and I think refusing to serve even food to our guy was a clear case of age discrimination and is quite possibly breaking a law. My first inclination was for all of us to walk out, but a couple of us had already ordered and had drinks served. Also, what kind of bar/rest doesn't have table service? We all had to line up and order at the bar. What the heck happened to good service??? We have plenty more work in the area this year, but this place is off the list...
Read moreThe Sloop lives up to its reputation as the quintessential Ballard neighborhood dive bar. It’s legendary because it’s been around for 70 years and caters to sailors and neighborhood sports aficionados who want to enjoy bar food, cold beer, and good company while they cheer for the hometown team. *If you’re not a Seahawk fan you’ll need a solid ego bc though you will be welcomed with Sloop hospitality, you will be out cheered 100 to 1. You have been warned.
For the 70th anniversary this weekend they had a fantastic live band called Heels to the Hardwood — turns out bar owner Patrick plays the guitar something serious. They write their own music and their playing of their songs is impressive as hell.
The anniversary special dish was perfectly fried chicken with plantains and a stunning beet slaw to go with a cold beer. One of the regulars, community artist Andrew was working on a mural outside while the music played. This place is an institution. It’s not because the decor is particularly pretty, but the vibe is hard-core dive bar with a large side of community love that makes you feel like you walked into Cheers.
Recommended coming to watch a football game on a Sunday. You’ll see what I’m...
Read moreDisappointed especially with all the upcharges that were not mentioned. Food wasn't bad but the prices for mediocre food is.
On the menu it says "$1-2 more due to inflation".
My shrimp, fish, chips (which I actually only ordered rhe shrimp and chips but the order was wrong) Was more than a few bucks. An upcharge for the potato salad which was not mentioned on the menu nor by the waitress. Shrimp were not beer battered. they were standard battered grocery store frozen type shrimp and only 3 of them. 2 small pieces of fish that were just okay and not a battering either. This was about $15 vs the advertised price.
4 Fish and Chips husband got. Waitress offered three different fry options but didn't tell us there was an up charge, which ended up being $1. $19 for 4 small pieces of undercooked fish and seasoned fries.
The change in all the fees is likely not legal. We didn't know the actual price would be as high especially with added up charges not noted.
No service, no water and the male bartender was a bit rude to us.
Husband's cider was decent $7.
There's better places for food. This was poor bar food at...
