So there I was. Roaming about in the wilds of Sonoma County trying to figure out how to eat healthier. My radar was saying, GYROS, GYROS, GYROS..but at the last moment I said, "Not today! " Sparing a poor delicious lamb I opted instead for Japanese cuisine. I remembered this place from a few other trips in the past, just didn't remember anything in particular, so...yay, give it a go for solo dinner.
Ambience, nice. Wait staff...a bit cool. Food? Well I ordered the chicken teriyaki and sushi combo. Came with miso soup, a wee bowl of cucumber with 2 small bits of strawberry and melon. The cuke was cut nicely/bizarrely into some strange cucurtainy shape like a kindergarten scissoring project. Not knocking the cucurtain, it was fun to chomp.
But then came the meal proper. Nom, nom, imma starving here! Miso soup, yay! Uhm...wait (slurp), uhhh that's not quite right. Bummer. Miso shouldn't be piping hot, 115 is fine. But this poor soup was slightly warmer than the Titanic. Wait, no not that bad, sorry for the reference. It was slightly warmer than...idk, my armpit or something. (...) The soup was too cool. Whatever. I can live without the soup.
Onto the sushi! Munch, chomp, nom. Ok, it was fine. A step above supermarket sushi, but yeah not as expert as the chef may think. Hey chef, I saw how that fllippy floppy salmon bit was too long and I noticed the seaweed wrap misfit on the unagi. Whatever. It's fish and I don't get enough normally so...scarf!
Onto the sad, sad finale. The teriyaki chicken. At first nibble I thought it might be a bit....under temperature. At second nibble I thought it might be not fully cooked. I sliced the breast filet, looked good- so tried a few more bites. Ugh. Tough, woody breast. Sauce can't hide a bad texture. So left that dish unfinished.
Wait staff asked how everything was I mentioned the soup temp (You want me to have to have them warm it?) No. Mentioned the chicken issue. She had no clue what "woody breast" was, should have led with the temp on that I guess. She said she would mention it to the owner. She then dropped off the ticket.
I waited to see if the owner (who was right there and ffs there were only 3 tables active, me being one of them), but she didn't seem interested in coming over. I paid, tipped and left. So tl/dr Ambience is nice But on this trip the Soup was too cool The meat was too cool and tough The staff seemed too disinterested in my experience.
I should have just...
Read moreCame here with a friend and wasn't impressed. In fact, I was a little shocked. Disclaimer, I am from Sebastopol originally but have lived in the Pacific Northwest for 10+ years.
Prices seemed kind of high for japanese food but this may be due to challenges in acquiring the ingredients. We both ordered udon and that was around $14 each. At first it seemed too high but the bowl was loaded and couldnt even finish it. Service was the shocking part. We arrived around 5pm for an early dinner and wanted to see the menu. Upon asking the woman (possible owner/manager) she barked at us to wait while she finished with her POS screen. Handing us menus would have taken 2 seconds and she could have asked us to wait more politely. Then when paying afterward she told us the bill could not be split unless mentioned earlier. Having worked with POS systems this crucial function is usually there but typically the operator doesnt know how to do it. Either way, it was again said in a tone that implied it was our fault. This person single-handedly provided a shockingly bad customer service experience. Food was below good and mediocre at best. Again we had udon and I'm from the Pacific Northwest so we get really good food like this up there. Portions we plentiful but flavor was rather bland. Also, grilled chicken in udon seemed kinda odd but wanted to try it. Chicken was too dry and with the raw veggies it didnt go well together. Atmosphere was fine and pleasant. The only two things that stood out were 1) our table felt sticky and 2) my friend's napkin was dirty. Alcohol options existed but we're not a focus. I dont even recall if they had beer on tap. It's wine country and more likely they had wine available. Not a huge factor as it wasnt part of the initial appeal.
Ultimately, prices were a little higher than expected but may be due to portions. Food was mediocre at best and service from that particular individual was shocking. Not many sushi places in Sebastopol and kind of a last option for me now. Dont plan...
Read moreNever again! Don’t waste your time! If there was a way to give negative stars I would. Horrible service, took my grandson for his birthday dinner, we were seated by a very nice server, then we got the real server, rude is being generous, we ordered, we’re served beverages and really bad miso soup, then we sat and waited for food for 1:40 after we placed our order, she never came back, until my grandson asked for his beverage to be refilled, tables that came in after us were served food promptly by the other server, the owner was there and never even acknowledged us,( it was quite obvious we were seated right in front of the register), the restaurant was not busy, when she brought the refill I asked if our order would be out soon, she blamed it on the kitchen staff saying she was trying to get them to make our order, I am a chef, I had been watching the open concept kitchen crew, they were filling orders in a timely manner. I asked when she had put our order in, she said I can just cancel it, I asked how much longer, 10-15 minutes was her reply. 20 minutes later we gathered our things and started to leave, she was coming out of the kitchen with 1 plate presumably part of our order(it wasn’t anything we had ordered) We went to Sushi Tozai 1/2 mile away, we ordered and we’re served within 15 minutes excellent service, 1server was handling the whole restaurant which was much busier then the one we left, food was on point, large serving, excellent and...
