Sugar Wings is located where the Willie Jewell's BBQ restaurant used to be. It’s to the right of the SMG theater and left of the Esporta Gym. As of this post, there no menu on their website but on one of the Google reviews, the menus are listed there.
Short review: Pretty good, would recommend. A little pricy.
Detailed review: Food - pretty good!
I got the sticky soy chicken wings meal with fries and blackberry lemonade. Some restaurants when they attempt to do a teriyaki or other Asian flavors, they tend to be a little too exaggerated and tends to be more sauce than chicken. These chicken wings were on point. Juicy, flavorful, and some sesame seeds on top really brought it all together.
I also got the fries. I’ve never seen fries like these before. They are almost steak fries but shaped like a potato chip. I was pretty happy about that. There are some fast food restaurants who serve potato chips and sometimes the chips can be soggy with no crisp which takes me out of the meal. These fries are fluffy and had great consistency.
I love lemonade so when I saw there was a blackberry lemonade I had to get it immediately. It’s good and also comes with the crunchy ice (imo the best kind of ice). There’s iced teas and lemonades in the drink dispensers and there’s also a small soda fountain next to that.
Service - Friendly and informative
As of this review, you can’t order online through their website. In store, they have two touchscreen kiosks, tv menus, and physical menus. Your order is through the touchscreen kiosk and you can only order this way (for now?). There is a staff member nearby that will answer any questions you have and assist you if needed. They figured out pretty quick that I know how to work a touchscreen so they didn’t bother me unless I had questions. From what I can tell, they are more than happy to help through the entire process if technology is not your thing. The chip reader below had a label that said they don’t accept cash. I didn’t ask if there was a way they could accept cash. That’s something to possibly keep in mind.
There was also staff that went around asking customers what they thought of the food. Not sure if this is something they will always do since this restaurant just opened but it’s good that they care about quality and making sure you had a good experience/meal (at least that’s the impression I got).
Atmosphere - Modern and clean
When entering inside the store, they have one of those walls that direct you to the kiosks (like PDQ, Blaze Pizza, etc.). They also have a pick up food area. They have booths and tables. My only critique is that all the tables are for four people minimum. There were also some larger tables for large parties and you could put some of the tables together for even larger parties. Since I went alone, I felt a little guilty taking up a table that could fit four but there are no smaller options.
Restrooms - clean but limited There are and mens and womens restroom but they are both each single stalls. I don’t know if the men’s restroom has a urinal I didn’t check. It’s a room with the toilet in the corner and a sink and mirror in the other. It’s pretty spacious in there so if you are in the mood for jumping jacks or shy about someone hearing you poo/pee/or whatever you do in a restroom, there’s plenty of room and privacy for that.
Now why four stars instead of five? Well personally I would give a 4.5 but that option is not available. And a 5.0 would mean this place is perfect, no notes; But I think there’s room to grow.
Some things that could be improved on:
Overall: 4.5,...
Read moreThis is a great chicken sandwich spot! The fried chicken is definitely made to order, it tasted fresh and a very specific style. It's not like a fast food fried chicken with tons of breading and flash froze. Definitely not pressure fried like a lot of other places, but their brine and seasoning is great!
The pickles on the sandwiches were amazing, I don't even know what kind they are but they're super flavorful and made the sandwich amazing.
The sauces are great and definitely home made as well. I didn't try the wings but my GF got a chicken sandwich with sauce and it was really tasty.
The fries are a cool idea, fresh and hot. But lacking flavor and salt. If they cooked them a little longer and brined them with something salty like the chicken they could def elevate them!
Unfortunately they had no cheese sauce or mac n cheese which was a big disappointment. They're hot plate/heater for the sauce didn't work? I saw a person behind the counter clearly eating it though, they must have made themselves a portion in the microwave or something haha. No worries though, I know how kitchens are and food safety stuff.
The place is kind of strangely laid out, it's large but not a lot of tables. Lots of open space. There's kiosks but the people at the counter usually tell you to order with them. Nice and clean, but it smells like bleach and cleaning products super heavily... probably off putting for some people but I could ignore it since the food tasted great.
The shift manager was clearly having a rough day as the other front of house employees were being weird (they were teenagers, so what do you expect). She was incredibly nice to us and suggested some stuff we should try. She reprimanded the one kid who was being pissy and annoying quite well when him and the other person behind the counter were wrestling in front of the customers?! Dude walked by us and asked if everything was okay in a really strange tone while he ran outside to make a phone call on his shift lol. I'm sorry you have to deal with that, her customer service skills are top notch to keep that composure around guests and then keep the IDGAF teenager employees in line.
Overall a 4/5: The food is awesome! If they had the mac/cheese sauce, which looked great, would have made it a 5/5 on the food. The store is weird, but it's in a strip mall so what do you expect. Definitely need to use more water when cleaning since it was pretty intense walking in. The employees who actually cared were great and food was fresher than any other fried chicken place I've seen in the area.
I'll be back every time I'm over in Largo and want a quick...
Read moreWe tried the new Sugar Wings recently and was very pleased. Our go to chicken sandwich has always been chic fil a, however since it’s being remodeled we decided to give Sugar Wings a try. Our first encounter was a dine in experience and they had been open less than two days. The Menu consisted of chicken sandwich’s with their signature sauces or plain. Wings with a variety of sauces, chicken strips, or chicken salad sandwich. We elected to go with the plain chicken sandwich. We thought since they had such a variety of sauces that they should have maybe had some samples of the sauces but they did have a brief description. We decided to get the sandwiches with the “dip em fries” and a drink and some of thier sauces which you have to pay for each sauce. I was disappointed again because the food isn’t cheap but not too expensive either however , to make you pay a small fee for a small amount of sauce I think is a little ridiculous. They have a couple of touch screen monitors that you select your choices from. Somewhat user friendly, but it could be a little easier however we navigated it just fine and paid with a credit card as they are not cash friendly. Your receipt has a number on it for your order so once you complete your order you can go find a seat. They do have a good amount of tables and chairs to choose from. The atmosphere is pretty plain and simple but we weren’t out for a fancy lunch, so it suited us just fine. It took about 10 minutes to hear our number and we picked up our food and drinks from the food counter. I personally think they should give you the drinks while you wait but wasn’t a big deal . They had a decent selection of soda, but the tea and lemonade is very good! Now to the food! The chicken sandwich was phenomenal in our opinion. Was very fresh, good sized and the breading was light. The dip em fries are excellent too. I’m a huge fan of waffle fries from our normal place however these are really good ! I tried the malt vinegar aioli sauce for the fries and it was delicious! The mighty Quinns BBQ was good on the sandwich too! Overall, it was a good meal and experience. We did come back and did takeout a few days later. Food took about 15 minutes this time as more people were there. Food again was good however we paid for cheese fries and they forgot the cheese. Definitely will be back and if we have the time to spare, this will probably be our go to chicken sandwich place even when chic fil a...
