Amazing place!! I’ve lived about 3 miles from this place for years and never thought about going because no one else in my family likes sushi (or much of any type of Asian food). Finally I decided to cave and get sushi takeout for my lonesome. It will not be the last time. Umi Sushi is now my favorite place I’ve tried. I’ve been to several in Warren, Madison Heights, Troy, but this was my first in my neck of the woods. Some more details:
Value - they offer a daily sushi roll as a special BOGO. It was the Butterfly roll (spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber, topped with crab stick, avocado, crunch, hot pepper sauce, and spicy mayo) $12.50 for 2 rolls!! Every day is different, so good on the variety, bad (on the wallet!) because it makes you want to go back every day!
Taste - I won’t mention the other places I have gone, only that I order about 4-5 rolls to try and split into two meals. I generally like to try different things and never get the same rolls. I loved all of these. Have never had that happen and one of the reasons I am writing this review!
Freshness - rolled fresh, taste fresh, smell fresh, look fresh, and no funny feelings about 4 hours later! :)
Presentation - I got two clamshell takeout containers, but they were still arranged neatly and made it home without falling apart or getting messed up. The rolls were tightly packed and didn’t open and were sliced all the way through and didn’t have any snags as you picked up a piece. I had about 40 slices and they were ALL perfect.
Ambience - I was there for about 10 minutes total, which is amazing for a drop-in takeout order of 5 rolls. The hostess even came by and asked me if I had been helped. When I said I was there for takeout, she spoke with the sushi chefs and perhaps expedited my order. Great service!! The restaurant was quaint, clean, quiet, and lit to where it was comfortable and relaxing - not fluorescent white bright. Good for a casual meal or a special date.
Add-ons - I got 2 sets of chopsticks, a container of soy sauce for each roll, and some wasabi and pickled ginger to share. They do charge extra on the menu for extra sauces/condiments, and I do feel that the portion of ginger and wasabi was small for 5 rolls. I will be back, and will see if they might add extra, but even for $1 to double the amount would be fine.
Summary - I would definitely call this my sushi home base. I will be coming back to treat myself occasionally or when the wife and I have a “at-home date night” which is the way we roll with 5 young children.
Thank you Umi Sushi for a wonderful meal! I...
Read moreAs a nurse who travels the country for a living, I can say with the utmost confidence that this is one of the most unclean and rude restaurants I've had the displeasure of coming to in quite some time.
I used to come here all the time. At the beginning of last year, I worked in the Detroit area for about 6 months. At the time this was one of my favorite spots for sushi. I'm not sure if ownership has changed or perhaps standards have fallen, but today when I visited my entire experience was off. My food was not prepared when I arrived despite having placed the order 30 minutes prior. I was questioned about my identity, the server asking me to recall the order. I spent over $50 on just a few items. When I got home, i opened my order to find things placed haphazardly in the bag. The miso soup was cold and tasted of nothing but dirty water. My gyoza was cold and fried to a crisp presumably last year. My sushi, which was topped with avocado, smelled like a bacterial infection or food poison and the avocado was brown and slimy. I called to speak with someone to see if I could return the meal for an exchange, even though it was across town. I had the misfortune of talking to an employee by the name of Andi. And informed me that their sushi is made fresh, but she could understand why the gyoza might not be good as they "fry it too long." She also tried to explain how the process of enzymatic browning works, but was unfortunately misinformed as their is a fairly distinct difference between avocado exposed to air and avocado that was found in the bottom of a New York city garbage disposal. After fighting with her, she said "I'll just refund you."
In short, TLDR if you will, I wouldn't recommend this place to my enemies. If you value your health, both mental and physical, let me have made the mistake for you and save...
Read moreI came here because many reviews on Google showed positive reviews and experiences, and I wanted to try it. My first impression of this restaurant is its dining area was really extravagant. The almond wood finish and the icicle lighting were the two things that stood out most to me. The menu was also really helpful because it showed a photo of every sushi roll that was offered (I have not seen that before at a sushi restaurant).
On the other hand, the sushi was a different story. My biggest issue is the sushi was loosely rolled. It was difficult to grab while using the chopsticks because many were falling apart. I was really looking forward to the lobster tempura roll, but it was a let down. The roll was overly covered with the lobster sweet sauce; it covered the flavor of the lobster, avocado, cucumber, and cream cheese that was in the sushi roll. I also ordered the Julian drum because one of the ingredients in it was sesame seeds. This was different and I had to try it. But I would have been better off not trying it because there was nothing really great about this sushi roll.
Overall, I was not really satisfied with my experience here. It could be something like a new sushi chef was recently hired and still needed more training. But I am not sure and cannot sit here and speculate why the sushi I got was not up to par. Maybe if I go there again, I may have a...
