Alfonso's Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Shelbyville

This place came highly recommended by multiple people so we were super excited to try it. Honestly though it was nothing to write home about. It's tiny on the inside, which gave it that kinda cozy vibe, I guess. They were consistently busy the entire time we were there, but as I said they came highly recommended. Service was simply okay. They stayed on top of the things we needed, but it did take a min to get those things, I said it was busy, also keep in mind the place is small inside. Food was good. I ordered my favorite dish, cause if they can't get that right what's the point. It's pretty much the same dish everywhere with a tweak or two depending on the restaurant it's really all in the flavor. Here I believe it's called 'Pollo Con Queso" and it was JUST Ok. My oldest daughter got her usual steak quesadilla and she was not a fan. She said it tasted weird, I think it was just that the steak was completely unseasoned she filled up on hers and her sister's rice. The sweet tea was terrible. The salsa and queso were ok. My husband is 90% sure he didn't even get what he ordered but whatever they brought him was pretty good and if we went back he'd get it again if he knew what it was called. Full honesty though I've had better, much better. I can't count them out just yet though it could have been an off night, so I'd be willing to go back and give them another try...

We’ve eaten here several times over the years, and typically I don’t complain, but we’ve had issues the last few times we went and tonight lost us as customers. Tonight we went and don’t get me wrong is was very crowded, we sat outside, and our server came she could barely speak English, she struggled to even understand the drinks we had asked for, which was soda and lemonade, we weren’t provided silverware, we ordered two cheese dips because there were 5 of us on two separate bills, we had to ask 2 times for our cheese dip which typically isn’t a big deal but when the rest of the visit went poorly it’s a big deal. When we ordered I told the server 4 times what we wanted, she repeated it back, then still had to have another server verify our order, the food arrived two plates were wrong, one was missing food the other was made completely wrong. My son’s food was never brought to the table, I asked for his order from another server he said he would bring it, and then never came back. We weren’t checked on one time, and we never received refills on drinks. We had to go inside to the register to ask for a bill and Togo box, then when we informed them about what had happened the only solution was to offer to get my sons food that he never received when we were leaving, after we had let him eat our food since his order...

A party 8 of us went in tonight, and we will NEVER go back. The food was garbage, with the carne asada being the single worst I've EVER experienced. Bland, paper thin, and tough as nails, it was like someone dumped a bag of expired beef jerky on the plate. The rice was EASILY 4 hours old, if not older, and drier than a desert. The queso was cool, and not in the good way, since it was partly congealed when it hit the table. Refried beans were severely under seasoned, lettuce was browning before our eyes. The guacamole might have been good had it been salted, but was instead lackluster at best. Then there was the service. I now understand why they're hiring servers. The ones there tonight, (5-19-2018) were the most inept I've ever seen. Forgetting orders, ignoring refills, horrible attitudes. What server reaches across the table, over someone's food, multiple times because they're too lazy to walk around, even though there was plenty of room? Well, ours, obviously.
