Chaves Bakery & Deli — Restaurant in Shelton

I was very excited to try this place for their custard tarts and other goodies but was pretty unimpressed.

We came in early Saturday morning would've expected a lot of fresh goodies. I got some custard tarts, mini cannolis(regular and chocolate chip, slice of tiramisu and a slice of the cookie and cream.

Custard tart 3/5 It's my first time trying a Portugese custard tart but had eaten plenty of Portugese egg tarts( from Asian bakeries). The tart crust was only a little flaky and chewy. The custard wasn't creamy or eggy but just very sweet. I tried heating it back up and cold. It was just ok.

Cakes 1/5 Both cakes tasted like it's been in the fridge for a while. The cake wasn't soft or fluffy. The filling and cream was harder than expected. The top tasted like fondant mixed with icing. It was strange textures in my mouth and was kind of disappointing. I even tried to let it sit at room temperature for a little to see if the cream would soften but it didn't help.

Cannolis 3/5 They weren't bad. They tasted like cannolis.

Wasn't impressed with my visit, but I am not sure if it was the time that I came? I would expect the freshest goods on a Saturday morning.

Was very disappointed with the lady who claimed to be the manager and owner. Saying she came in at 5am and needed to go home with an attitude. She was very mean and rude to us as we tried to explain the kind of style and cake we needed. She asked if one of my friends knew English and when i said no she got even more irritated telling us she had a niece who has been here in the U.S for 40 years and didn't know a lick of English. My question was and that has what to do with me purchasing a cake And to top it all we couldn't understand her at all because she too had an accent but with respect we tried to be kind. Was very surprised because I buy my cakes there all the time including my daughters sweet 15 cake and never had a problem but instead received kindness from everyone. I am very disappointed that the friend who I brought for the first time to Chavez and a place I bragged about so much let me down in showing her that its not a nice place at all. She now won't ever step foot there again and the treatment we received was not fair nor kind. We ended up leaving with out placing order for her 5 year...

First time purchase from this bakery. Not good. Not good at all. Walked in and saw a large round see-through display case in the center of the customer area. I opened the large door (no locks) and removed a cake I liked for my wife's birthday. Brought it to the service counter and the two women immediately copped a nasty attitude. Telling me only they can remove cakes. I said you should put a sign to let customers know. They said there's a sign on the back side. I recommended they add a sign on the front door because customers may not walk around the case to find a sign they don't see from the front. They just continued their obnoxious behavior. Very rude and bad customer interactions I then ask to put "Happy Birthday Heidi" on it. She asked how to spell Heidi, so I clearly wrote it down. Paid and left. I open the cake at the party and my wife's name is spelled wrong !! The cake taste was nothing special, could have been a no-name grocery store cake. Never going there again and do not...
