Just WOW! My partner and I passed this little jewel on our way from Shelton to New Haven to do a 45+ mile bike ride. Needless to say, we were starving coming back into town. We decided to give it a try and were not disappointed. We really enjoy trying authentic foods from other cultures, but that entails having to ask a few questions. The first thing that struck me was how patient the staff was. They not only did a wonderful job describing some of the dishes, but seemed genuinely happy we chose to eat in instead of grabbing food to-go. It was like we were family. (Note: they do have very limited space inside, but we had no problem getting a table on a Saturday night. There were also a couple of small tables outside.)
As for the food? It was fantastic! We ordered Jerk Chicken and Swallow Egusi. (Or is that Egusi Swallow?) The latter gave us our first taste of FuFu and as a Southerner from North Carolina, I was in heaven. It was like eating mashed potatoes with your fingers ... which the owner encouraged us to do. (FuFu is typically made with yuca. I assume this was as well.)
The Jerk Chicken came with plantains and a choice of rice dishes. We picked Jollof and let's just say ... I have found my new favorite rice dish. While the Jollof was a "side", the portion was large enough to feed several people.
We also had Mixed Meat Pepper Soup (spicy but very tasty) and Spring Rolls. Everything we ordered was not just exceptional in taste, but came in portions so large we have enough food for at least 3 more meals.
When we asked for some to-go containers, the young man helping us was meticulous, ensuring there were separate containers for each of the dishes and that they were packaged properly for the short trip home.
Definitely one of the most unique and memorable dining experiences we've had. We are digital nomads who have been traveling the US for 7 months, and this experience not only fed our bodies, but our souls as well. Thank you, Heritage Spice! We wish you much success and hope to try your other amazing dishes again someday!
PS: The owner left me a sweet reply and I somehow managed to remove it when I tried to add pic’s. I am soooooo sorry, Heritage Spice!...
Read moreConsistently fresh, delicious food that never disappoints!!! We appreciate the vegetarian options. Our favorites are Gbegiri & Ewudu and Ewa Agoyin. The food is well prepared/seasoned, well presented and well packaged; the portions are very generous! The restaurant’s customer service is exceptional. The staff is accommodating and customer oriented. Staff take time to explain their dishes (ingredients) and consistently follow order specifications. Specifically, some family members don’t tolerate high heat/spice level and the restaurant is responsive to serve the spicy sauce separately to allow the customer to control the spice level to their desired tolerance. Their ability to customize dishes demonstrates their food is not premade or pre-packaged. Instead it is freshly made in house and indeed one can taste the quality ingredients used in the freshly prepared foods. The restaurant also kindly offers a catering menu which we are excited to learn about because we enjoy the food so much and would love to order larger portions. Really glad to have discovered this hidden gem on Uber Eats and can’t get enough of their yummy food & excellent customer...
Read moreThis is a great little restaurant in Downtown Shelton. We stopped in for lunch and ordered two appetizers, beef suya and samosas, and a main dish, gbegiri Ewedu. The suya had a nice level of spice and was served with onion slices. The combination was a nice bite. The samosas were served hot with the heritage sauce they made themselves.
The gbegiri Ewedu is normally served with tripe, but we asked to substitute curried goat which is an option. The meat is served on a bean porridge and meant to be eaten with your hands. We opted for spoons and found it to be tasty.
The service was friendly and accommodating.
Parking in downtown Shelton can be tricky but we found a free, public parking lot down at the bottom of the side street near the restaurant.
The restaurant sells their heritage sauce in squeeze bottles so we added one to our order to take home. It's great...
