On Sunday (May 4th), after attending church in Shoreline, I decided to enjoy a picnic at Richmond Beach—a nostalgic visit after having lived in Bothell for the past seven years. Before heading to the park, I stopped by Sultan Gyro and Shawarma around 1:30pm to grab a bite.
While I was looking forward to the meal, my interaction with the young man at the register left me feeling uncomfortable. When I used the term “lavash,” he responded with a smirk and corrected me, calling it a “tortilla,” in a way that felt unnecessarily dismissive. I did appreciate the cook's friendlier demeanor and was glad he completed my order, as I didn’t feel up to continuing the conversation with the cashier.
As I was leaving, the cashier called out “have a nice day” in a tone that felt more combative than kind—an unfortunate way to end the visit.
As someone who is neurodivergent, I value environments where staff are mindful and inclusive. Seattle is generally a place that embraces diversity, and I hope that leadership can improve its customer service training to reflect that spirit.
Unfortunately, I don’t see myself returning, but I do hope my feedback helps bring about a more welcoming experience for others...
Read moreWho doesn't love a good shawarma, right? I had the lamb shawarma and rice. Both were fantastic which made this place that looks a bit dumpy absolutely worth every moment, every bite and every savor of the flavor even better! The two gentlemen working on the day I visited were gracious, polite, friendly, warm and inviting and went out of the way to make sure I was happy with my meal. I ate in, and let me tell you the dining area is tiny and not decorated or frilly, but it was perfect since the purpose of sitting there and eating is all the experience that's necessary. I can't speak for.the.rest of the menu, but I can say that the lamb shawarma, the rice and the fries were 110%, by far the best I've had in the PNW. My friend had a chicken something or other, which I had a bite of, and it too was fantastic, but oh my, the land was just out of this world. Highly recommended!!! Don't be off put by the appearance of this place, it's absolutely worth a stop, and just the interaction with thess guy's was was worth the time. And speaking of time, it wasn't a terribly long wait to get the food, either. Great place, great foot,...
Read moreWe got food to go, and the wait was surprisingly short. While we were waiting, we talked to the guy making the food, and he said that this location is an expansion from the U District location. He also said that the hours are approximately 10a–10p, but that since they're just starting in this location they sometimes close early, but the plan is to eventually be open until 10p.
We ordered falafel salad, Arabic shawarma w/ chicken, grape leaves (dolmas), and Greek fries. I wouldn't order the falafel salad again (Gyro Hut's is much better), but everything else was really good. Particularly the chicken shawarma -- it was magical and will definitely be my regular order in the future.
The restaurant itself is very clean and inviting (though, yes, the outside looks a little sketchy!). Prices are reasonable for the...
