We've been coming here for YEARS and today was our last. My husband and i brought our son and his friend. My son always orders their Swedish pancakes and although not listed on the kids menu he gets 3 which is the kids version off it (they basically sub their pancake option for 3 Swedish)...anyway our son's friend said he wanted the French toast so my son decided to give it a try. He pointed to the kids meal menu and said "i would like cinnamon french toast" and they ordered the scrambled egg and (sausage or bacon) that comes with it. Their meals came. They ate them. The end....until the bill came...and each child was charged $11 for an adult meal and $6 add on for scrambled egg/bacon....so a whopping $17 a meal before taxes for EACH kid....more expensive than the actual omelette meals my husband and I had ordered. When we questioned the waitress she had the manager Anna come over. Anna from the get was unprofessional...she asked us "what can i do for you considering the food was eaten?"....I explained to her how often we come and how this is obviously a huge misunderstanding but when your child orders off the kids menu CINNAMON French toast (cinnamon is used to make French toast) you expect that if there's a possibility for confusion of adult vs kids meal that the waitress should clarify...especially since nobody in their right mind would pay $17 for a child. She had the audacity to tell my husband and I that's "it's a learning experience for everyone and you have to watch your kids next time for what they are ordering" and told us if we would have clarified ourselves after seeing the meals weren't shaped like French toast (but their cinnamon roll French toast) that she would have thrown it in the trash and would have had the cooks make the kids French toast. I explained I had never ordered the French toast. Adult pancakes are huge...kids are silver dollar typically...the adult portion of the Swedish is larger...the kids is 3....the french toast was circle shaped so i didn't think twice...And if the adult meals can be downsized the kids...EVEN IF the kids had ordered cinnamon ROLL French toast (which they didn't)....the waitress could have clarified and/or offered a smaller portion? The manager Anna said the best she could do was take off one meal... again explaining she couldn't do much since we let our kids eat the food. My husband said we weren't coming back and she said "that's your choice"....We put effort into supporting locally owned places....especially during the pandemic and even now....we won't be back again. Their piss poor customer...
Read moreEggs ’n’ Things is a classic, old school breakfast and lunch place with locations throughout the north-west area of Los Angeles (Camarilla, Thousand Oaks, Valencia, Ventura) including this one in Simi Valley. Everyone loves a good breakfast place, and even if it’s not particularly good, everyone enjoys the experience of being at a classic breakfast place which was generally our experience.
It was pretty busy, as one would expect, on a Sunday late morning, but they still managed to seat us in 15 minutes.
Crepes are their specialty. (Even if they pronounce it cray-pes) and they bring everyone a complimentary crepe which is at least half the excitement of eating here. The crepe was okay…it had a little blueberry sauce on it and powdered sugar. I’ve had much better crepes.
Otherwise, the menu is basic but extensive for breakfast.
I had the 2 egg breakfast with egg whites, hash browns, and biscuits. The eggs and hash browns were good enough, but neither had a lot of flavor. The hash browns were cooked correctly all the way through (not always a given at breakfast places) and not too greasy, but they were a little dry.
The biscuit also tasted right but needed to be baked a little longer to get a little flakier on the inside.
My wife had the Eggs ’n’ Things, Benedict, without cheese or English muffin. She’s gluten-free and wanted to see if they’d put it on spinach instead of the English muffin. They don’t offer a gluten-free bread option and they were willing to do this, but it was an up-charge as opposed to a straight substitution. It came with eggs and tomatoes on top of a bed of spinach. She thought it was good, (except for the tomato which wasn’t so great). The eggs were cooked well and the hollandaise sauce was nice and lemony.
If you’re looking for a classic, diner-like breakfast place, that’s what you’ll get here, and that may be enough. We do wish the food was prepared better and had a little...
Read moreThis is our fave breakfast spot. Usually everything and everyone is good or better. Today my wife could not join us in the restaurant so I ordered her scramble to go with a side of fruit, the kitchen put her hot food and her cold fruit in the same container so when she got her food neither was edible. We called and spoke to the manager, the food was remade, but the manager told us that next time we would have to ask for the hot and cold items to be packed separately, wtf. So I drove back and got the food, the seven pieces of fruit were packed in their own container but sitting on top of the hot, heat rises people, when I mentioned the minimal amount of fruit, the manager told me with a straight face that the portion was appropriate for a side of fruit. The food was originally inedible, I have driven minutes and miles to get what I should have already gotten, I still am not whole and she wants to quibble about a scoop of fruit., I will spend my money elsewhere. Sadly, this could have all been avoided and this review could have been about how great the experience was with a smile on the face and in the voice and maybe a few Swedish thrown in for the trouble, you know the stuff they give away...
