Zack's Char-Grill — Restaurant in Smithfield

I gotta say, the only reason we even ate there is because our car had broke down and it got towed to Black's Auto and Tire, also on Market Street so it was nearby. We are SO glad we did because the food was great! My double cheeseburger with bacon was the best burger I'd had in a long time! But, it wasn't just the food that made this place so awesome.

The staff! The staff were amazing and so friendly. The owner took it upon himself to help us when he didn't have to, refilling our drinks n what not. As a family of 6 with 4 kids and two of them under 2, and feral...he was so kind and patient. My wife informed me that when I stepped out to take an important phone call, the kids began climbing back n forth over the back of the booth seats and just kind of being restless...atleast they were having fun since our vacation to Myrtle Beach had been ruined.

Zach, I assume is the owner and the one helping us, never even got upset. He just smiled and even gave the kids candy. But it was a few hours later that really impressed us, so much so that from now on, when we go to Myrtle Beach, we will be stopping by to eat there. As we were unpacking the car to load our stuff into our ride home, he stopped by to check on us. Seeing our situation, he stayed in the parking lot for about 20 minutes to help keep an eye on the kids. He even offered to take our bags of trash to his dumpster. We definitely didn't expect what he did next. Zach came back with a bag full of cold drinks! Thank God for this man.

I had to be in Smithfield for jury duty and needed to pick up a late lunch. Given a choice between a local place and a chain - I will go with a local joint. I had seen good reviews of Zack's and when I saw the sign - I had to check it out.

Walk in - greeted and welcomed. First thing I noticed was how the owner went back and forth between cooking and his customers. The atmosphere was laid back and comfortable. Even though it seemed like he was having ongoing conversations with the regulars - at no time did I feel excluded or forgotten. I lingered after I was finished and watched him make a point of speaking with anyone and everyone and make an effort to connect with people. Even though I had never been in Zack's before - I could see this becoming a goto spot if was in town.

The place says Char-grill so I went with the bacon cheeseburger. When done, he offered me multiple options but I went with an old favorite - chili, slaw, pickles. First bite and I was transported back home to a favorite drive-in. This isn't some overblown foofoo fancy sandwich - it's a down to earth, good tasting, solid beef burger with crunchy bacon (yeah - exactly what I ordered). Fries were crispy and HOT - no stale, soggy potatoes here (a pet peeve of mine). Being full, I turned down the apple turnover and ice cream but you can bet I'll be back. Next time - chicken salad or BLT. I highly recommend anyone...

Let's start off by getting this out of the way, the food is always excellent!! If you want great food fast the way "you" want it at a great price, this is the place. There is nothing crazy on the menu and they do have daily specials. I have tried everything on the menu trying to find something I didn't like, I was very disappointed to find that I liked everything. You know you usually find something you don't like about something, not here. Let's talk about service, service is great!! There is no wait staff, just a few behind a counter. I prefer this, keeps the costs down. Do not be scared to go at lunch if you are in a hurry, they are fast and the accuracy of the order is always spot on. You really need to stop by, owner is super friendly and always in high spirits. GREAT...
