The staff was very friendly, but wow, the food was really disappointing. I've heard extremely mixed reviews of this place, so I decided I'd see for myself. I can confidently say now that I'm firmly on team Masala in the great Powderhouse vs Teele Square battle for the superior aloo gobi.
I am not Indian, so it's really not my place to critique a restaurant whose cuisine I'm not an expert in, so I'm simply basing this review off of my personal taste preferences and from my countless experiences eating at Masala, Guru, Punjabi Dhaba, Mela, and several restaurants in Newton and Waltham, as well as some home cooking from Indian friends.
Mint's aloo gobi was fairly bland and the baingan bharta seemed smokier than other baingan bhartas I've had before. The vegetable biryani was not good. the carrots and other vegetables were clearly frozen or canned because they had a really bad consistency. And the overall flavor tasted like burnt plastic to me. sorry to be harsh, but my wife and I both immediately thought it tasted really wrong.
To the friendly staff at Masala up the road: I'M SORRY I STRAYED FROM YOU. I WILL BE BACK NEXT TIME. I WILL NEVER BE DISLOYAL TO...
Read moreOrdered on weekday afternoon on uber eats. Got it on time and it was still warm so points to uber eats. I ordered thali- i chose 2 entrees aloo mattar & paneer kadhai. Aloo mattar was okish at best and paneer kadhai was not authentic it was pretty sweet. Paneer was pretty dry. No spicy flavors at all (tbh it kinda threw me off a little). It came with rice naan & papadum. All of them were fresh and warm- no complaints. Paneer tikka masala katti roll- literally just turned the same paneer kadhai curry into roll and called it kathi roll. Literally exact same taste. paneer was dry and hard af. Like i'd spend my money in indian grocery store & get authentic roll for half price. Chicken jhol momo-this was a saving grace. I absolutely loved that they put jhol in a different container. Momos were warm & flavorful. Jhol was cold but really tasty. Not too spicy not too bland. Really good balance. Gotta say that uber eats packaging was really good. They made sure everything came fresh, warm and nothing moved while in...
Read moreMy recent visits to this cozy eatery were centered around their Veg Fried Rice and Veg Hakka Noodles. Both dishes offered decent flavors but had their quirks.
The Veg Fried Rice was packed with veggies, perhaps a bit more than ideal. The hearty vegetable presence overwhelmed the rice, but the freshness of the ingredients was undeniable.
The Veg Hakka Noodles, on the other hand, featured thicker noodles, which might not be to everyone's liking. Despite this, they had a distinct chewiness and a well-balanced flavor profile.
A word of advice: plan for extra time if you're picking up your order, as my Veg Fried Rice took about 25 minutes.
The restaurant's ambiance is charming, with Indian artifacts and paintings, and they offer a nice touch by providing complimentary tea to pick-up customers.
In summary, it's a spot with potential for veggie lovers, offering hearty portions and decent flavors, albeit with some quirks. Be patient with the wait, enjoy the ambiance, and savor the...
