WATCH YOUR CREDIT CARD STATEMENTS. We had a disappointing experience at Tu Y Yo in Somerville. First the first was mediocre, despite the high prices. Salt was the predominant spice. Waitresses were beautiful but terrible service. We were the only ones in the restaurant (came early with kids) but still took forever for them to acknowledge our presence. Then when we got our credit card statement we noticed the waitress added on $6 extra dollars (she rounded up her tip to $20 when we left $14.).
We called the restaurant, spoke with the manager, and he said he didn't know what she was thinking, but acknowledged I was not the first to call him about this. Apparently other customers had the same thing happen. He assured me he would issue the $6 as a credit back to my account. Well, two billing cycles later, no such credit. I called my credit card company and since it has been over 90 days they won't help. It is not a big deal, it is only $6, but it is the principle of the issue. I can understand a desperate waitress resorting to such tactics (maybe she is underpaid?). Doesn't make it right, but at least I understand it. I DON'T understand how management would not stand behind their offer to refund my money.
I wasn't going back anyway since I thought it was overpriced and bad food, but now not only will I not go back, but I feel compelled to spread the word about...
Read moreLet's face it. Boston isn't exactly a Mecca for Mexican food (mixing up my cultural references there but bear with me). However, Tu y Yo serves up some really tasty eats that strays from the tex-mex burrito/enchilada/quesadilla you're liable to get elsewhere in the Boston area. The guacamole came with two generous scoops and a dish of obviously-freshly-fried-made-in-house tortilla chips. The tamales sampler dish was perfect: $10.95 or so for 5 different tamales, some sweet (coconut, corn), some savory (pork, chicken, fish). All beautifully wrapped and portioned out, and served with a nice side of beans and cheese. And the entrees were solid as well: I found the mole sauce good although a little on the lukewarm side, and the chicken breast a tad dry. The crepa de cuitlacoche (Mexican "truffle") was damn delicious though -- cheesy crepe wrapped with excellently sauteed mushrooms and corn. We finished off the meal with an avocado cheesecake which was only okay -- it was an interesting dessert, for sure, and I loved the crunch and saltiness the pistachios brought, but the avocado itself felt a tad over-frozen and not that pleasant texturally.
Barring a few small nits, this is an excellent restaurant if you're willing the make the trek out to Davis Sq. and then some. Cute ambiance although nothing too stuffy, friendly service,...
Read moreDisclaimer: Whenever I go to a Mexican restaurant in MA, I try to only order things that I would not readily make for myself at home (e.g., enchilidas, tacos, mole). So even though this place might have out-of-this-world mole, I was not inclined to order it because my grandmother has a killer recipe that I love.
Just the same, there were plenty of items that greatly appealed to me and it was kind of tough to decide what to order ultimately. For 3 people, we shared: 1) the birria tacos (INCREDIBLE with the double tortilla action and slice of cheese in the middle); 2) the Crepa de Cuitlacoche (DELICIOUS with that creamy tomatillo sauce); and 3) the Chile Relleno en Nogada (complexity in every layer of FLAVOR). I think I'm going to be dreaming about those birria tacos for a while.
A couple of things that were disappointing: they did not have grasshopper tacos (Tacos de Chapulines) or the avocado cheesecake - by far the most eyebrow raising items on the menu. We were so curious and so sad when we couldn't order them.
I would love to go for brunch because their brunch menu looks awesome!
Also, the staff are incredibly kind!! Thanks for making our first trip to...
