Crap. These crepes sure are good.
The affordable Rao coffee and large windows overlooking Davis are just what I need to wake me up on a bright Saturday morning. And the savory and sweet crepes are what make me want to stay here all day.
Too bad it's pretty crowded and people probably wouldn't be too happy with me hogging a table for that long. The interior can get chaotic, with a line nearly curling outside the door with people perusing menus and making tough decisions.
There are "super crepe" combinations. There are sweet crepes. There are savory crepes. You can make your own crepe. And there are even non-crepe options like soups and salads (but if you get that I really question your restaurant decision).
I'm too sleepy to make hard choices. I just want it all. Finally at the counter, I order a Super Lamb crepe, which combines spicy lamb sausage, roasted peppers, caramelized onions, fresh spinach, and goat cheese. It comes to around $10. And a small coffee is around $2, which you can dress up with skim/soy/whole milk from the fridge and honey/cocoa/nutmeg/cinnamon fixin's at the counter. $12 total isn't bad at all for a filling brunch.
After ordering we're handed our buzzers and sit at a small table. When the buzzers sound about 10 minutes later, we're unsure where to go. The counter? The kitchen? We stand uncertainly and make moves toward that general direction, when a cook comes out holding our plates and takes the buzzers. A little awkward, but we have food now! Let's eat!
My Super Lamb crepe concoction is pretty large and reminded me a bit of an omelette sans egg. Or a quesadilla sans tortilla. The crepe itself is a bit thicker and more pancake-y than others I've tried, and its slight sweetness balanced out the salty, greasy sausage well. The onions, peppers, and greens added and nice freshness, and the goat cheese was just the right amount of creamy richness. Overall, this would be a great crepe to order at any time of day. My dining companion ordered one with spinach, peppers, and egg, which seemed to be a bit less stuffed than mine (mine was a "super crepe" after all) and more breakfast-y. She was also pleased.
I wish I had enough room in my tummy and money in my wallet to try a sweet crepe, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. From looking longingly over the sweet section of the menu, I deduced that they can make crepes with every temptation you could possibly want like fruit, nuts, graham crackers, chocolate, Nutella, and even ice cream.
Next time, Mr. Crepe. There will surely be...
Read moreSo I recently went to Mr.Crepe as it was listed as gluten-free And relatively near by a playhouse we’d come from. My partner suffers from celiac and initially we were treated well with our order being considerate to her condition. This was her first time having a crepe and we enjoyed enough to over look the ambivalent staff as to order again. Unsure of the menu I asked the cashier if the dessert crepes were available as gluten free. He assured me that they were and I asked for a strawberry Nutella crepe. I was skeptical when we received a fluffy pale one but I assume it was just different batter from the first crepe. Going off my gut on the second bite I went up to the cashier and asked if it was gluten free. I could see the guy knew he screwed up on the spot. He confirmed that no it wasn’t. I felt his ambivalence ten fold as he just asked what was her symptoms. We received no apologies no offers of reimbursement, nothing. The guy just shrugged and I had to pressure him for the managers information. He asked if we lived near by, and couldn’t be bothered to raise alert. The number he handed off didn’t so much as look like a number within the area let alone the one listed on google. Even if they would return our money the cost of gas to return isn’t worth it.
Get better more reliable staff Mr.Crepe
Additional crit: the tables were sticky, the menu is hard to read, the staff makes no effort to welcome guests or show them the menu in the shop, there was a crushed/bitten banana in the...
Read moreThe place was just okay. I was visiting my son who's in college doing grad work at Tufts, and I was really hoping that this would be one of our local places we could enjoy when I visit in the years to come. We have a wonderful crepes restaurant in our hometown, so this would have been a really nice fit.
The crepes were just awful. It was seemingly cooked buy a 14 year old that I'd never tried to cook according to a recipe before. Literally, the worst crepe I've ever had.
The coffee was fair, and the service was average. No one seems to be at all committed to the success of the store.
Perhaps I came on a bad day, but to be honest it was a Saturday morning and I would have expected a high level of service. Perhaps this is what passes for good local eatery in the city, but it certainly can't hold a candle to the basic chains like Panera bread or even Starbucks.
I would have given it less than a three-star, but again, perhaps I came on a very bad day. I won't be...
