Velma's Cafe — Restaurant in South Gate

I noticed this place a few weeks I mentioned to my wife that "there's a spot that looks like they're open, but who knows what they sell...I just notice people in there". Fast forward to Friday night, of course we have no idea what we're going to eat, but we know we have to pick up our son soon and we're hungry!

Of course my wife remembered our conversation from a few weeks ago (women), but this time it was a good thing! She looked up the location and found the name and read all of the great reviews posted on social media. As soon as she showed me the pictures of all the food (especially the tres leches) I was sold.

My wife placed the order and she was like "WOW" the person that took my order was super nice (Diana). She was patient, took her time to go over the menu and knew it was our first time because we ordered a little bit of everything.

Fast forward First, the Empanadas were delicious, but they also give you an equally delicious chipotle sauce that takes it to another level. Ribeye Tacos, were so damn good (quality meat) and cooked by a professional. Milanesa de pollo was perfect in every way (tender)! Birria beef tacos were perfection to the max and my favorite! And finally...desert...(tres leches & macadamia nut cake w/esspresso) mmmmmmm.

To sum it all up, there's a reason why you don't see pictures posted. There was no time to stop and take a picture, by the time we realized how good everything was it was GONE. Rumor has it we're going back tomorrow, so I might post pictures...

Worst service ever!! Expecting my family of four to sit and enjoy our meals on a table for 2! Upon walking in I asked our waitress if we can get the table next to us since the party was already paying and the table she sat us in was a table for 2. She said she will asked. They refused! I politely asked them how do they expected all our food to fit in this small table. She basically responded it's not my business. So I said fine! We are not staying! At this point I'm furious that I had to get my family up and embarrassed ourselves and walk out. But that was not enough for them! To top it off she said you can pay up front!!!! Can you believe this girl!! At this point I did say pay for fu* what!!I had enough!! What could they possibly be charging me for??? Our drinks that we couldn't finish!! The Bad service!! The embarrassing moment I went thru with my family! NO! On the positive side the food is good and I wanted my kids to experience the delicious food. But never did I think this would happened. I would definitely not be...

Food was great. Pictures provided are of both the "milanesa de pollo" plate and a small plate order of beef "empanada". The empanada dough melts and the meat is very well braised also tender. The milanesa plate is a great mix of savory and sweet (onions on top give the sweet factor). I requested extra of the onions. I also forgot to mention that the chipotle homemade sauce that accompanies the "empanada" was an incredible pair. I did not try any "postres" (desserts). Only complaint I have unrelated to the food: suggest they buy softer napkins. The napkins provided are so rough on the skin. I came by at around 9am on a Wednesday and I suggest this time when it is not jam packed. The service is much more attentively when there are less customers. Lastly, can be a little pricey in my opinion so its not a place I would eat every week. I paid a total of $20.93 for 2 items (no drinks), in...
