El Chilito Restaurant — Restaurant in Downey

Unimpressed with my experience at El Chilito. They charged almost $16 for a single fried fish burrito. There was no crunch to the fried fish. Instead, it had a mealy, grainy texture and the fish flakes were falling apart into a mushy mess. The other burrito contents didn't mix well either. Instead of adding lettuce, tomato, sour cream, salsa, and other ingredients that would go well with fish, it was filled instead with red hot sauce, rice, and beans. All that did was make the burrito unnecessarily spicy and contribute to the mushy taste. The burrito was filling and they didn't skimp on the fish, so I'll give them that. Overall, I don't think this place specializes in seafood (a fish burrito wasn't technically on their menu, I had to ask for it), so perhaps I'm being too harsh. In any case, I wouldn't...

We were around the neighborhood and tried to find some authentic Mexican food to eat. After searching and reading reviews, we decided to give it a try. As other reviews mentioned, it's for to-go orders only now. We order their burritos. Kids had carne asada and I had al pastor. The food was ready pretty fast and they were nicely wrapped and hot. Ive been eating here for 5 years. I'm not a weekly regular or anything like that, but I do know that they have delicious tacos de carne asada, also sometimes during the cooler months they have champurrado that is the absolute bomb. Yes they charge you for extra salsa and there is a fee for using a card which is no surprise, but the food is worth it. The place is clean and the food is always fresh. And if its not fresh they simply apologize for not having it and they don't sell it to you.and yes sometimes they might be watching the soccer game or the play offs, but they are speedy and friendly.
