Sumo Sushi Kingston — Restaurant in South Kingstown

I hate to do this because as an asian american i love so much to support asian businesses. When i saw the astounding reviews of this place I was like I have to try it!

I write this review now because amongst all the kind reviews speaking of how customers were treated by the shop owner, i was treated very strangely and differently for no apparent reason.

I walk in and decide ill get something simple since it was just before 11 AM. So i look at the sides on the menu and saw he offers a side of sushi rice 3.50$ and add avocado 1.00$. This sounds perfect, so I ask if i can get that and he kind of chuckles, smiles and says no and i just laugh back thinking he's joking, then he looks back down to his work station so i look at my phone.

Maybe a minute or so goes by and he goes "what do you want?" and im like "oh i said just wanted your side of sushi rice with some avocado" Hes like "oh no" and im very confused now so i ask "oh? You dont have avocado?" And he says "no i have it, Im not making that though."

What...? It isn't like i asked for something random off menu... my request was very simple, and explicitly named on his menu. I walk away wondering why i was...

Steve my friend you are a long way from Thames St. in Newport. I thought covid did your business in like so many others.. Come to find out someone bought that place from you and you moved near URI ! We were so happy to hear your voice and you re- established the Sumo Sushi across from your wife's Korean restaurant. As usual we drove about the same distance from Lincoln RI to eat your wonderful sushi rolls and have some miso soup. The same delicious taste and great personality. We will be back again soon Steve. Mr. Lee’s sushi restaurant is a one man sushi army owned and operated by him. A hole in the wall atmosphere of just him at his sushi station and a single small table with two chairs. Mr. Lee’s sushi, small dishes, and soup are phenomenal. We ordered multiple different sushi rolls, miso soups, and his signature chef dish crunchy crab hand roll. He was extremely hospitable and gifted us two hand rolls that he concocted up on the spot just to be nice. Everything down to his own recipe for his hot sauce, broths, etc is made from scratch and hand made. Absolute gem of a place and a man, recommend everyone to try Mr....
