Fasta Pasta was this terrific Italian take-out joint in South Lake Tahoe that was the mother of all hole-in-the-wall places. It was located inside a liquor store, had great food for low prices, and had the world's best garlic bread for something like $3+. Sadly, they (he) closed.
In its exact spot is now Curry & Grill. We came half for the nostalgia of Fasta Pasta, and half prompted by decent enough reviews. Sadly, though, it had none of the attributes of what used to make that spot great.
We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, samosa, garlic naan, and mango lassi. Flavorwise, the Tikka Masala and the Butter Chicken tastes nearly identical and not anyhing special. Flavorful enough and good over rice, but the obviously pre-cooked chicken meat was bland and it was just chicken and sauce; so kind of boring. Samosas were decent; 3 big ones for $9'ish. The lassi was also alright, but kind of gritty and that 12 oz cup was just tiny; not worth the money. On the other hand, the garlic naan was flavorful and the standout amongst our entire order; the only dish worth recommending.
The more egregious transgression of this place is they are charging prett much sit-down restaurant prices. And yet, volume-wise, the portions are not as much as take-outs from real restaurants. I mean, the appeal and promise of hole-in-the-wall places is you get pretty awesome food, and/or you get terrific prices, and/or you get a lot of volume for the money. Here, you are paying restaurant prices for pretty average food and you get less. SO....?? At least they were fast (we were there at 5pm before ski season, so probably...
Read moreWe tried this place 2 days ago and had a horrible experience. Wanted to eat Indian that evening and this one had "good " reviews. First of, no one responded the phone when I tried calling them thrice to place an order. Since the only other "good" Indian food place in South Lake Tahoe said they were extremely busy, we thought of heading here nevertheless and placing the order in person. Our order was Dal Fry and tandoori rotis. The lady at the front desk said the wait time would be 20 mins. 10 mins after taking the order, she tells me they are out of dal. She should have told me this while taking the order itself. Second and the worse, I substituted dal with the dish of Aloo- gobhi. When we tasted it, it was the worst I have ever had. It was as if they had thrown together diced potatoes and cauliflower in a little water and pressure cooked the whole thing. Our saving grace, so that we didn't sleep on empty stomachs, was a little bit of leftover dal they had thrown in with our order. I guess it was half a cup and we could eat the rotis only because of the dal. I am never heading that way when I am next time...
Read moreWorst Indian food I have eaten in 47 years of loving Indian food. Food gave both of us diarrhea the next morning. Med spice is way too hot and harsh and overwhelms the taste. Aloo Gobi was horrible just like steamed potatoes and cauliflower and there were no peas or cumin or coriander or cilantro. Whatever spice they use is too hot and just plain nasty. The Indian owners must not eat their own restaurant food as it's inedible. Veg Biryani was a huge amount of food but inedible as they used the same over powering spice so it was just orange colored rice with tiny amounts of what looked like canned green beans and carrots. Naan was supposed to be garlic and was thin and not good. Do Not Ruin Your Tahoe vacation by eating this non authentic Indian over spiced food. I should have read all the 1 Star reviews on Google going back 7 years. Hygiene is also suspect at this hole in the wall take out in a liquor store. Papadams and raita were good but how could you screw those up? 0...
