It's hard to find a decent Mexican place around here but this'll do. I grew up on the west coast and moved here from San Diego 20 years ago. I did not eat a decent mexican dish here until 6 years ago. So for 14 years I ate your Mainer food wrapped in tortillas. Pathetic. Of course I've traveled and ate good mexican elsewhere and I never could understand why Mainers do not know what a burrito is supposed to taste like. Seriously, if a restaurant served Thanksgiving leftovers in a tortilla, you guys would eat it up and think you just had a cultural experience. I learned to never trust mexican food served by a white girl from Buxton or a gringo with a beard/goatee. I didn't see either at Guerrero Maya and was thankful for that. I was also happy to be greeted by a very friendly wait staff and a bunch of chips and salsa that actually tasted GOOD. It could have been hotter but I won't complain. The prices are higher than expected but the portions are big. You'd never pay this much for this kind of food in say, Dallas, but we're a long way from Texas. I would normally give this place 4 stars but I'll add 1 more because I'm so glad to have an edible mexican...
Read moreSo me and my family pull up to the restaurant, right? This place had fantastic reviews online, so I was a bit skeptical when it took about 20 minutes for our order to even be taken. When it is, though, I kid you NOT the waitress pulls up and doesn't write anything down! My squad was a whopping group of seven, and we had orders like, 'hold the sour cream and onions but add in zucchini lightly roasted but not completely cooked.' (I may be exaggerating a wee bit, but hey, if you're still reading this review I know you'll finish it out). I hadn't ever seen a waiter just kinda not write anything down either, so I was shocked when she got our food COMPLETELY RIGHT. The only thing she didn't do was keep out the sour cream on my mom's order and some cheese in my soup, but you'd be shocked at the speedy turnaround once the waiters were informed of the issue. And they gave us dessert at the end?!? For FREE?!? I've never done an online review before, but let me tell you WHAT if you're ever vacationing in New England and wondering where to eat, this place has got the dough! Boogie on over and check out this scrumptious (chef's kiss) joint 👩🍳 it's...
Read moreWe were driving home from work and wanting to find a place with authentic flavors and Guerrero Maya delivered! Welcoming, lively atmosphere, mariachi music in the background, and to-die-for margaritas!! Great selection of tequilas, and the only place we've found in Portland (yet) that even has Mezcal. The food is fantastic and when we heard more Spanish spoken from other guests, we knew we struck Añejo gold! The complimentary salsa that comes with the chips was fire-roasty smoky and had great heat. The chile rellenos were massive and delicious and the chicken mole was smoky and chocolatey. You can order 3 different sizes of margaritas and if that isn't cause for celebration, I don't want to know how you measure your life, because choosing between 3 sizes AND the list of tequilas you get to choose from is awesome! It's like a Choose Your Own Adventure, with tequila and mariachi with a wedge of lime. Come eat and drink here. ...
