We were driving through town when we spotted A La Mode—a charming little house on Liberty Street that we’d heard great things about. My 93-year-old mother is gluten and dairy free, so when we heard this place specialized in exactly that, we had to stop in.

I walked in with three generations of our family—my sister, my 25-year-old daughter, and my mom (her Nana)—and what happened next truly warmed our hearts. In all my life, I have never seen my mother’s eyes light up the way they did when she realized the entire shop was gluten free, with plenty of dairy free options too. She was in awe. “This place is like a dream,” she whispered to us.

We sampled several of their treats, but the Dairy Free Cookies ’n Cream ice cream was the absolute highlight. My mother could not believe it was dairy free—especially with those generous chunks of cookie! She kept saying, “I can’t believe I can actually eat this.”

The girls working there were so kind and patient, answering all of our questions and making us feel completely welcome. It was such a special experience to share across generations, and the joy it brought my mother was priceless.

We are vegan, and we came here based on a recommendation. Our family member was told by the manager that they always have vegan options (she specifically asked if we needed to call ahead but was told that wasn't necessary). Also based on the website (specifically under "cupcakes"), it's misleading in the sense that it conveys you can walk in and pick up a single vegan item. However, when we got there, they didn't have any vegan options on hand. They had some dairy free, some egg free, but nothing of both to make it vegan. Maybe the manager didn't fully know what "vegan" meant?
