I'd give 2.5 stars if I could. Since I can't, unfortunately, I think I need to round down.
My family ate here during the long drive between Utah and California. We were looking for something fairly quick (still a long drive ahead of us!), something that wasn't burgers or other typical fast food, and preferably something locally-owned.
On the plus side, the service was very fast, and we got a lot of food for our money. We got three family meals, and I expected a little bowl of soup with each -- instead, we got a larger container, probably a pint with each. A lot of food for the money. Quantity-wise, we probably could have fed everybody (2 adults and three kids, ages 7, 5, and 2) with just two meals.
The hot and sour soup was very good. I don't usually care for sweet & sour chicken, but my daughter insisted, and the chicken itself was very good, but had WAY too much sauce. We received another plateful (!) of the sauce to dip our eggrolls and crab rangoons in.
On the negative side, the service was fast -- but unfortunately, not great. The lady helping us was friendly, but had a really hard time understanding that we were going to feed our family of 5 with 3 family meals -- meaning that we needed extra bowls and plates. And we had to ask repeatedly for more things before we eventually got what we needed.
Furthermore, the other food wasn't so good. The beef with broccoli tasted pretty fishy, and my kids wouldn't eat it -- even the ones who love broccoli. We also got the spicy "shredded pork in Szechuan sauce" -- which was more like "sliced pork" and seemed like half of the dish was celery, with a lot of green pepper and a little pork.
I really wanted to rate this place a little higher, figuring that my experience was probably ruined a bit by cranky kids (the 7yo in particular), and thought about rounding my 2.5 stars up to 3. However, given that food is supposed to taste even better when you're really hungry (which we were), and we still found it to be mediocre, makes me round it down.
If we lived in Sparks then we might give it another try, but since we only stop in a time or two per year on our way through, I'm pretty sure we'll find other places to try. Sorry,...
Read moreIve been going to egg roll king since i was a kid (mid 90's) their food isn't top cuisine but it wasn't bad at all growing up, i would actually enjoy eating there. Over the years it seemed like the quality just kept going down, not just with the food but also with the up keeping of their restaurant. i would mainly go to the oddie location next to what was once Kmart. These past few years i catch myself thinking to myself "why did i buy from here again" once i enter their doors and get home to open my food. Ive been very disappointed with them but always go back hoping things got better (which they haven't). the food isn't awful and have some highlights, and the people working have always been friendly. i just hope they can get a hold of themselves before they drive themselves into going out of business. If the owners do end up reading this, please do an overhaul and work on making your locations look clean and updated. the same pictures on the walls showing the food has not changed since i was there in the mid 90's and I'm sure they were there long before i was born. i know this place can do better so please do better as i would love to see you guys in business for many...
Read moreLove this place. My personal favorites are their chicken fried rice, shrimp chow mien, mongolian beef, and egg rolls. The lovely lady who works there is always so nice! They have understandable polices like not making food until you arrived due to past customer not showing up (which is such a waste of food if you ask me) and an increase of price due to inflation (they ask you to refer to their paper menu as board prices aren’t accurate). You can find these policies and notices on their wall! I live closer to the location on Oddie Blvd but I come to this location because their service and quality of food are better- especially their egg rolls! When I use to order at the Oddie location I feel so unwelcome the atmosphere is just weird there. The dude never hands my order to me he puts it to the side and makes me get it like totally shrugging me off even though they ain’t busy and I ordered in store. Their food is okay. While at this location the lovely lady always hands my food to me and always makes me feel welcome. They recently got a soda fountain so you should check it out. I will be a lifelong...
