Y’all, I hate to say it, but this pizza is not getting cooked all the way through. I LOVE Detroit style, so I really want this place to succeed. However, considering what you’ll pay, might be worth it to wait until they get their bakes down right.
We’ve been out for dinner three times already and the problem is the crust, which is usually one of the best parts about a DSP. The crusts are all significantly undercooked, resulting in a heavy, doughy crust. They add the sauce under the toppings, but the dough doesn’t fully cook before the toppings are finished. The result is a dense, gummy layer throughout 2/3 of the pizza.
It also seems like the bottoms aren’t getting the traditional, lightly fried touch that makes DSP so great. They’re cooked, but missing is that golden brown, lightly caramelized crunch. When we were trying to figure out how the crust was different, my son said “they’re dry, kinda like a Tostinos”. Tip your pizza up and look at the bottom - you’re looking for a beautiful golden brown, like a nice, light focaccia or a Sicilian. In our experience here, they’re more dry and pale - you can see it in pics others have shared here.
Wait times have varied quite a bit. First two times was about an hour (caveat, one was opening weekend), last time was about 40 minutes. We’ve ordered wings each time (shoutout to Mambo sauce, good to see it outside of DC), but it would be nice to get them in advance while you wait. Rosemary curly fries are great. Service is solid beyond the wait. Combining with Yaya is a genius move.
We’ve had Detroit style all over the country: Moto and Sunny Hill in Seattle, Via313 in Austin, Blue Pan in Denver, and everywhere in between (we truly seek it out). However my last visit to Sauced is the first time my kids declined to join. I don’t think it will be my last visit…but it will be a while before...
Read moreMy first experience was great last Saturday around evening time. Today I go in just shy of 3pm. (2:52 pm) and didn’t realized y’all didn’t opened til 3pm. So I asked the person who was there if they was closed, they said they opened in a few mins I said okay cool. So I take a paper to just look at cus I didn’t wanna just stare, but I already knew what I wanted. So I’m just sitting at the table directly from the host stand. And at 3pm she pulls up the banner. So I’m assuming she still needed to open til so I sat patiently waiting for her to look at me and ask me if I was ready. She completely ignored me and acted like I didn’t exist. So as someone in the service industry I just waited patiently. Until a guy walks up and tries to order, I’ve told him I’ve been waiting over 30 mins. It’s almost 3:20 pm at this point. And she looks at me and said I’ve been opened when I pulled the banner back and I’m like well you literally paid no attention to me and acted like you had a million and one things to do and she says well I assumed you was still deciding. And I’m like really? So instead of arguing I just ordered a pizza. I wait another 20 mins and get my food. I leave I go home and luckily I live around the corner cus my pizza was burnt like too hard to even bite.. So I drive back and tell her and she’s like I can refund you and I’m like yes please. Even the bartender was stand off ish when I asked for a sample of the beer on the brewery side. I am not complaining just to be, this was not customer service at all. And the fact that she burnt my pizza, I’m just appalled. Yeah I highly doubt...
Read moreWe just moved here from a city with a brewery whose Detroit-style pizza is so good they make staff sign an NDA so they don't share the recipe, and were so excited to hear about a new Detroit-style pizza joint in the Spokane area. We definitely weren't expecting that level of greatness, but even so this pizza disappointed. Given all the rave reviews we had high hopes, but the pizza was underwhelming. It was cooked properly to the edges, but doughy and undercooked in the middle with either no sauce at all, or so little that it wasn't detectable - I even dissected my leftover piece before writing this to be sure I didn't miss it. This is ironic, given the name "Sauced". We had the Detroiter and the Mahalo and ordered a side of sauce that tasted like plain tomato sauce with a hint of sugar. For the price, there are definitely better dining...
