Edit 8.1.23, after response from 'business owner'. This was not an ownership change of the Lantern. This was a tenancy change, coupled with a disingenuous use of - association with - the prior tenant's standing in the neighborhood.
Origianal Review. The reviews for South Perry Lantern do not reflect an accurate history of this business. The current proprietor of this establishment stole all the old good reviews posted about the previous patron. The new patron knew he had nothing to offer...so he stole the old reviews. Do not trust any positive reviews of this business. They are likely a pre-2021 review. Fair warning. If you like this place... Great for you, truly! The rest of us preferred a pre-2021 'Lantern". Current lantern doesn't deserve the name tangen stole. Jeremy, if you have legal right to this name... Sue me. I have the funds. Sue me. I'll gladly watch you flounder, while the spokesman refuses to cover the story of anything negative about your businesses. TED. TED. COVER THIS.
Edit May 2023: I went here. Had to watch game 7 Kraken somewhere I could walk to. Had "poutine", a salad and 5 drinks. Left $173 lighter. This place is a joke, in addition to being a disingenuous POS. The poutine was 97% salt. My friend wouldn't even eat it. So, in review: 1. Food no good; 2. Expensive AF for no reason; 3. owner won't even call the joint by it's real name ("grant park something"), because he wants to use the old name of the place people used to care about. I assume people who steal things have no ideas of their own.
2020 review: Still can't bring myself to do business with the "new owner". Will 100% visit this space again if owner changes the business name, to a name that wasn't poached from good people, for...
Read moreWe've been back a few times now the service is still a bit slow. Most recently we went during the Perry St market. Didn't even know it was happening. The Perry fog was different tasted more like an orange cream cycle. The food was still good and the place was way more full it was odd because we were actually greeted at the door and we were given the option of inside or outside. I got the nachos this time and my husband got the curry and it wasn't spicy at all.
Overall it was a good experience. Parking is iffy. The atmosphere was awkward especially if you've never been there before because nobody will welcome you nobody says anything to you you walk in there's no sign saying seat yourself nothing. So my husband and I stood there for a little bit we looked around, everybody seemed busy and never even looked over at us. We just found a seat and gave them 15 min before we would have just up and left. Luckily at that 15 min mark someone said they'd be with us soon. We waited another 10 minutes and finally got menus and some water. I had to flag down the person and ask them for more water because they let us run empty. We got burgers because we figured it would be a good judge on general food. The burgers were quite good, and they hve a gluten free bun! Once we had a way to fill our own water and our food things were fine, but it was hard to get the attention of a server. The atmosphere was good we were able to talk and not over hear conversation too much and we were able to talk. My husband and I both...
Read moreThey insisted I bus my own table! Post-covid, as I have compromised immunity, I carry my own wet wipes to use as napkins, and after a messy sandwich like today, my son and I can leave a modest pile of wipes on the table when we leave. Today, the manager (owner?) was walking by as we got up to go and asked us to throw away our own napkins! So, I took my handful of used napkins and, turning in circles, tried to find a trash can near the host station, the bar, somewhere. Finding none, I followed the manager back to the restroom area. Couldn't find him, but both the restroom doors were locked. I am still carrying my handful of used napkins. So, vowing to never eat here again, I finally just dumped them on the floor by the restroom door, figuring they could be swept up with a broom rather than touched by his delicate hands, and I left.
We have been eating here for quite some time, about once a month or so since it's right in our neighborhood, and the signs of decline have become evident. First they stopped serving coffee a few weeks back. Then they eliminated a lot of favourite food items like onion rings as they downsized their menu. Today, they appeared to have eliminated plates and silverware, serving our burgers in plastic baskets and we had to ask for a knife. It was between 5 and 6pm on a Friday, and the place wasn't even busy.
So, the Lantern is already showing signs of possibly going out of business, and now they want you to bus...
