Hef's Restaurant — Restaurant in Spruce Pine

I just don't know about this place. I have given it several tries thinking "maybe next time will be better", but it has never been the case. The first time that I was here was just a terrible experience and it's something that I will never forget about and now every time I think about this place or it gets mentioned I am just reminded of it. It was during a football game and the place was empty except maybe 3 tables and a couple people at the bar, so I was like yay no rowdy crowd or drunks falling out of their chair...yeah, that wasn't the case just ONE REALLY ANNOYING girl at the table beside us that was just unbearable. She was so loud that even with me going down the hall and into the bathroom I could STILL hear her. Have you ever been in a place and heard this god awful laugh and turned around and it was like this 600 pound chick with a really deep voice that was laughing so hard you thought OMG is she going to make it....well same kind of person just on a really skinny chick so her voice did not match her face at all and just when I thought I was going to blow my brains out guess who decided to show up...her sister and a whole other table of her friends that were just as bad as her and the others that were even worse. About 5 minutes after they showed up.. the family table of 4 guys and 2 girls in front of us apparently had enough because they kept looking at them like please shut the fruck up and finally they just left. I really didn't think myself was going to be able to sit there the rest of the game and I had more than had with this group. The worst thing was that NOTHING was ever said to them like hey can you calm down a bit or do you mind moving to the table in the back or ANYTHING. I was just really pissed off. It was bad enough that I had spent $30 on wings and probably another $40 on top of that for Pizza and beers that night and then not to even be able to hear the game which was the whole reason I had went there was just more than I ever want to deal with again. I got the A-1 Pizza and it was alright...nothing great or anything and hell it was like $20 and then I was told that the beer that I was getting was $3.50 a glass since it was on tap but when the bill arrived it had magically went up to $4.75 a glass and all the waitress could say was "yeah, that wasn't the one you was talking about". The worst thing food wise is the teriyaki wings.. I don't know what the he11 flavor they are, but they taste like they have been soaked in soy sauce as a marinade and then been breaded in pure salt. I have NEVER had anything so bad. I attempted to eat one and took the rest home and not even my dog would eat them if that says anything. When I think teriyaki I think sweet and Asian..not whatever this was. Yes, I even attempted to go back there again not on a game night and just get something thinking I was just in a bad mood that night and it had made everything awful, but it just made no difference...the food is just not that great and too expensive and they just don't have that much so really nothing...

Didn’t have high expectations, just wanted somewhere to stop on our way to a friend’s engagement party in Morganton and wanted to support local. We knew that it being a Sunday, places would be busy, and we shouldn’t anticipate anything super speedy. As far as atmosphere and quality of food is concerned, we weren’t surprised that we had found a sports bar. Hell, it’s what we signed up for.

What was the most disappointing was the service. We started on a great foot with our server, and as someone with over ten years in the service industry, I am very patient and understanding when food takes a little while. Unfortunately, we were there for an hour without being checked on or given updates on our order.

We watched as people who ordered minutes before us and after us cashed out their tabs. At this point, our appetizer had been bussed for over thirty minutes. At no point we’re we given updates. When I finally asked the server to check our food, she continued to sweep the floor for a minute and on her way to the kitchen. Of course at the moment we were ready to walk out, the food magically arrived. Almost an hour after we ordered it.

I asked to speak to a manager and instead got to speak to another person serving. Seems like a family affair. Nothing was comped and it took a verbal scolding to even get an apology or acknowledgment. The server even tried to say that the kitchen staff would prepare orders out of order. I’ve never been to an establishment that works this way. Again, as someone who has served tables, I’ve had my fair share of orders “on the fly,” but those would come with acknowledgement, accountability, apologies, and at the very least, comping part of the meal for the inconvenience caused to the patron. Ok, it feels more like a bar with a restaurant, as opposed to a restaurant with a bar. This was our first impression, which almost made us not go in. However, don't let that discourage you. We visited Hef's last weekend, at the recommendation of a complete stranger we met at the "Fire on the Mountain" a Blacksmiths event downtown Spruce Pine. While the restaurant feels more like a bar, the food is actually very good. They don't serve typical bar food that is below average. But instead, we found the food to be very good and fairly priced. The servers are also very attentative. We really enjoyed their pizza, boneless chicken wings and calamari, and oh, also sweet potato fries. Everything was great. On Wednesdays, you can enjoy a large 3-topping pizza with 6 wings for $12. What a value! Stop in to enjoy some great casual food, in a casual environment at Hef's Restayrant. I really believe you will enjoy it. Make sure you tip your server well. They work very hard at earning your business, with a smile. You might even run into Hef,...
