This place is a neoliberal nightmare.
Everything has been crafted to squeeze out the little things that make a coffee shop a cozy place to go and rest up.
Instead of a water cup, you get a pitcher filled with lukewarm water and little paper cones that hold a thimble of water and can't be set down until empty.
The singular bathroom has a code on it that requires a purchase to use. The employees will also give you attitude about asking for anything that is not an order.
The straws are brittle biodegradable plastic that doesn't make sense given the water cups are paper and would be landfilled.
In isolation, these things are whatever, but taken together they are a horrifying reminder that the rent seekers are trying to juice out any sense of enjoyment and relaxation out of these places.
And the coffee was just alright. Slightly burnt and served way too hot.
EDIT: Revising my review after comments from the owner which further prove the point that this place is extractive. Notice how they complain about the free water? Does that sound like a place that wants you there? That is cozy? Probably not. Avoid this dump!
And no, neo liberal is an economic mindset, not political. It's a greedy, selfish mindset this place...

Read moreThis place has a very cool vibe and lots of nice places to sit and work or read or play a little game with a kid who you bring. I have only been here once. I decided to try to online ordering system. They didn't seem to get the alert but it wasn't a problem. As soon as I mentioned it, they were able to see the order and make it. I went to the St Charles location but was still charged a Sycamore tax.. I'm a bit uninformed about the area though so it is possible that the Sycamore tax applies to more than Sycamore proper. I ordered one of their lattes with oat milk and enjoyed it very much. They added a shot of espresso and I think I would always get it this way.
Oh! They have All Gender bathrooms. I LOVE this for both efficiency and inclusion.
There is a piano inside.. I wonder if someone ever plays it? I...
