My wife and I have been coming to Pizzeria Tra Vigne for about 15 years, and have always enjoyed the food and ambiance.
Unfortunately, this was not the case on our last visit. .. Let's start with the good things...Reservations are not necessary, the prices are reasonable, the service is good, the bread was nice and crusty with a generous amount of butter. So, what was wrong? Starting with Caesar salad, one of our favorites, we discovered that the salad is now presented with whole leaf romaine lettuce instead of chopped. What difference could that make, you ask? All I can say is that the chopped version of the salad was much tastier than the whole leaf version...perhaps because the dressing adhered to the lettuce differently. I would rate the salad as average Next, my wife had one of our favorite dishes, pasta Bolognese, which she rated Good, but not as rich tasting as in the past. Also, you used to be able to order the Bolognese sauce on pappardelle pasta, which is no longer on the menu. I had the chicken Parmesan over penne. I have never had this before, so I can't compare to previous versions, but that wasn't necessary, because this version failed on its own. The main problem was the chicken cutlet. It was a little too thin, so that the breading overwhelmed the chicken, which might have been all right if the cutlet had not been considerably overdone. The marinara sauce was just average. On the positive side, it was a generous portion. To be fair to the restaurant, I didn't complain about it..I'm sure they would have cooked another cutlet if I had asked. I would have to rate this dish Below Average because of the cutlet The final blow to this evening's dining was the fact that the restaurant now has a $15 corkage fee. One of the very nice things about coming to this restaurant was the "no corkage", so you could bring a bottle from one of the local vineyards. The manager told me that the new owners changed the policy a few months ago. So, I'm afraid that Tra Vigne has gone from one of my favorite restaurants in the area to just another one of the many places competing for the...
Read moreI heard from a friend that this place made their own mozzarella so since I never tried freshly made mozzarella, I needed to come here and eat it! The restaurant had a classic looking, clean atmosphere. I really enjoyed the open kitchen and seeing the magic happening back there! Service was quick and everyone was friendly!
First thing we ate was the mozzarella, we wasted no time! They brought it out, sliced it, served it on toast and drizzled olive oil on top with seasonings. It was everything I wanted and more! So soft and creamy. It absorbed the black pepper and garlic flavors along with the olive oil. Just an absolutely divine piece of food!
Next were the meatballs and garlic rolls. The meatballs were well seasoned and covered in that wonderful mozzarella cheese. It was also sitting in a pool of marinara. Not sweet but tart and didn't take away from the meatball. The garlic rolls were a little tough for me but I loved that it was sitting in a pool of olive oil and seasonings!
We ordered two pizzas. The first was the black truffle pizza. I love truffles and this is packed with that truffle flavor! I enjoyed the amount of truffle oil they put on the pizza, so fragrant and delicious! The second pizza was a half and half: funghi and positano. Both pizzas were really good, I found the fried lemons on the positano to be especially refreshing and paired well with the shrimp! The funghi was a little underwhelming after having had the truffle pizza but by no means does it mean it didn't taste good!
We rounded off the hefty meal with some mocktails (Blood Orange NOgarita). It was bitter and sweet and a bit salty from the tajin. A great end to an amazing meal! I have to come back for that mozzarella! Really enjoyed my...
Read moreI cannot speak to a regular meal experience here, but if you are looking for a place in the area to do a group dinner, I would highly recommend Pizzeria Tra Vigne for the high quality of food, choices, service (both preparations & during the meal itself), & overall value.
I wanted to write to commend Pizzeria Tra Vigne for the great experience my work team had when we ate dinner here as part of an offsite in wine country. Kimmie, who coordinated the logistics beforehand, was very communicative and responsive to any/all questions I had regarding a fixed menu for a group of 35.
We paid about $30 / head inc tax & tip for soft drinks, caesar salad, assorted pizzas, & gelato...which I found very reasonable given that most places make you rent a room for a group of our size which jacks up your price quite a bit. They have a large selection of pizzas and gelato flavors if you choose to go this route. The staff was also accommodating to our one gluten free attendee.
The place is pretty big & open (and seemed to be appropriately staffed) so luckily we did not feel like we were totally overwhelming the place. The parking lot is big, which also can be sometimes hard to find on this main street in St. Helena. Only thing that was slightly disappointing was that the corkage fee is not waived for groups ($10/bottle). All our guests were overall very pleased with the experience; thank you...
