Marilyn's Bakery — Restaurant in St. John

This was our first time getting a cake from here and treated my mom very disrespectfully and completely messed up the cake she bought as a surprise gift for me and my wife's anniversary.

She asked them for chocolate buttercream frosting, and what they gave her was clearly not that. When my mom picked it up, she told them that it didnt look right at all. They IGNORED HER and just told her she was wrong and it was fine.

Well surprise surprise, when my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and tried the cake, it was not fine. We knew something was up immediately just from looking at it. We have gotten the same type of cake on birthdays each year from many different places all over. This was not what we asked for at all.

It was a joke. Tasted like pure whipped cream from a can. Definitely not chocolate, definitely not buttercream either. I see in their other reviews that there are pictures of what an actual chocolate iced cake from this place looks like, so I know they're CAPABLE of making something correctly at least.

Maybe they're just incapable of admitting to a mistake 30 minutes before closing. Even though they could have avoided this whole situation by being honest in the first place and giving a refund so we would at least know there's a problem BEFORE our celebration...

Not one ounce of responsibility was taken here. We will see how they respond to this review and our attempts to contact them for a resolution and will update this post depending on what they do and how...

A good friend of mine is a caregiver, first time she went the pie and service was great, next visit with her client not so much, she goes in with her diabetic client, who needed to eat while there was no one there they place lunch order and wait meanwhile a bigger group comes, places orders, they all get their food, my friend waits, after about 20 minutes she approached the counter and asks if the food was coming as the larger group was eating and she and client are still waiting. The man who never identified himself starts to yell at her and tells her to get out, or he’s calling the cops! Really, all that over where is my food, this client needs to eat to take his meds, why are you making such a big deal, give the food that was order and paid for and let’s move on! This left such a bad taste in my mouth! I am all about helping small businesses but not when they treat people so badly! I’ll take my business to Butterfingers in Munster. Treat people...

Went in to try their box lunch special and my experience in store was a bit unpleasant. I've had them before as my company will get dessert and bakery items for company events and I figured I would try out their other food as well. I stopped in at about 11:50 and was not greeted upon entry. After standing there for a few minutes I wondered if I needed to say something but the lady turned around and asked what I would like. I ordered the wrap but was informed a bit rudely that they do not have that. I am assuming I should have checked or called in before coming in but I didn't know. I was just ordering off the menu. They did offer to substitute the flatbread though since it was a similar item just on a flatbread. I saw no issue with that but the item I received was not the flatbread on the menu either. It was just a flatbread with red and yellow peppers, onions and greens. The worst part of it all. They left out...
