Bottom line: I grew up in San Diego, traveled through Mexico and this was the oddest, most inhospitable dining experience ever for me - not just the worst Mexican restaurant experience, but THE strangest dining experience overall. I even lived in NYC where things can be pretty weird, but I've never had a dining experience like this. And the food is just ok.
Here ya go: It was 3 p.m.. I walked in and asked for a table for one. The hostess seemed confused - like she wondered why I was there. Once we were on the same page with what I needed, she offered me a seat at a table right at the door - someplace you would sit while waiting for take-out. There was a downpour so I asked to be seated in the dining room. They looked confused again, then finally allowed me to sit at the table on the opposite side of the door and kinda in the dining room. I politely asked for a table more into the actual room but they said no, because they had reservations - it was 3:00 and the place had only 3 other customers, but ok, maybe there's a party coming in. The menu was fine - nothing unusual. They have great reviews for breakfast so I asked if I could get huevos rancheros even though it was later in the day. They couldn't do it, no problem, I totally get it. I then asked if they had chiles rellenos because I couldn't find them on the menu. The server had never heard of them and during our conversation, a party of two was seated at the table I asked about in the dining room. Okay, np. As the server went to ask the kitchen about the chiles rellenos, I felt like one of the movie characters who smells their armpits trying to figure out what the deal is. Anyway, she came back saying they don't make chiles rellenos (again, totally fine, no problem), but while she was gone I had tried the chips and salsa - stale and watery - so I told her I would take a couple burritos to go. The vibe in the place was so off + inhospitable - I didn't want to stay. I asked for couple carne asada burritos with guacamole. She was very surprised I wanted the guacamole inside the burrito. In my experience, that's how they usually come (?). Once again, an odd conversation. They forgot to include the guacamole anyway so I have no idea if it was very good or not.
In all, strange atmosphere and the food is meh. I know it sounds crazy but it didn't feel like a regular...
Read moreWow......delicious and perfectly prepared. The chicken stuffed chile rollenos were absolutely superb. Service was friendly and prompt. Can't wait to go back and try more of what the menu offers. What a nice place, not overly fancy but who cares? Good food is what really matters anyway.
Update: Ok so today a month later we went back for lunch specifically wanting those awesome stuffed chile rollenos again. Unfortunately this time it was not to be. Our waitress while smiling and nodding a lot had no clue what we were talking about. So we settled for burritos instead. These were very good, huge, delicious, and presented well. The salsa for the customary included chips however was basically red colored water.... tasteless. We advised our waitress about this and much much later long after we were done eating our burritos she brought back something that was so hot my eyes instantly watered. Actually beyond hot... thermonuclear. Much much later after waiting what seemed to be an eternity we got our check. So I have to ask. What happened to the great service we had the first time? We enjoyed our burritos but other than that this visit was a major disappointment especially considering that we were really looking forward to coming back. Maybe today this was just a bad day for them in the service help department and we were the unlucky ones to hit it. Maybe not. If so the owners need to fix this issue stat. A great chef may not save the day if the service is consistently horrible. Not fair to the kitchen staff. As a result I'm lowering my rating to 4 stars. While I did say after my first visit that good food matters, good service is just as important because it affects the overall experience...
