One of my girlfriends made a reservation online. It was easy to make & done a week in advance. Parking is abundant. The hostess was warm & friendly & she asked if I had a reservation. She was ready to seat me even though I was the only one there. I opted to wait, but the fact it was offered was nice. Nice start right? When 3 of us were there, the hostess walked us to our table. The table had 4 chairs so I reminded her we had a party of 5 & would need an extra chair or another table. Imagine my surprise when she said “we don’t push tables together” & 2 of us could sit at one table & 3 of us at another. Huh? I’ve never heard of refusing to seat 5 people at one table. My friend said when she made the reservation, it didn’t say parties of 5 or more would need to be split. The hostess advised she would ask if we could sit together at one table. The owner came out & talked to us. He asked how we were & asked my friend how far in advance she’d made a reservation, if she’d called him to make it, etc. The scene was bizarre. Sir, if one has the ability to make online reservations, why would anyone call you? He then proceeded to take over 5 minutes to explain to us their restaurant is set up for parties of 4 or less, adding another chair would disrupt the flow of the restaurant, the severs would “get messed up” if he allowed a larger party, he had a “rush” coming in later, & the experience is “best” for their staff & guests if the seating is for 4 or less. There’s no way an establishment should make guests feel as if they did something wrong when nowhere on the reservation site or email does it say parties of 5 or more have to be at separate tables. We made a reservation for 5 he made it seem as if he was doing us a favor to allow one more seat. After making it seem like an inconvenience, he finally had the hostess sit us at a booth & put one chair at the end of the table. At this point, the experience was tainted. If you want a true mixed cocktail, they don’t have it. You’ll be relegated to things like shots, Hennessy & coke, cranberry & vodka, etc. All of us, except 1 person, ended up getting the bottomless mimosas which were $20 per person. There is no carafe. They simply refill your glass when you notify them it’s empty. As far as food, my friends & I ordered the fried catfish/friend chicken plate which came with greens & red beans and rice. This dish was also bottomless so if you wanted extra, you could ask for more. My other friend ordered the oxtails plate which came with greens & red beans & rice. My fourth friend ordered the fried chicken plate with greens & red beans & rice. The last friend ordered 6 chargrilled oysters & the salad with strawberries, mandarins, & candied pecans. All of the meals were bottomless except for the oysters & salad. The overall consensus is that Cuvées does its fried chicken & fried catfish well. Both were hot, freshly cooked, seasoned to perfection, & the portion sizes were large. We didn’t even end up utilizing the bottomless option because there was so much food. The greens had a unique taste that no one at our table nor the waitress could describe. The waitress confirmed the chef does not use vinegar. The greens were a no go for 4/5 of us. One of our friends liked them. One of my friends & I liked the red beans & rice. The flavor isn’t what you’d typically expect from red beans & rice, but it was still good. 3/5 people didn’t care for the red beans & rice. There was a slice of cornbread. The cornbread wasn’t anything special. It could’ve been left off. The bottomless mimosas were a decent. The waitresses we had were the best part of the experience. The waitresses had to carry the entire restaurant on their backs & they did a great job considering the...
Read moreWe popped into CuVees for brunch and were greeted by friendly staff who showed us to our table. There are games for the kiddos while you wait and great background music in the background. We ordered the cajun pasta with chicken, fish and grits, mac n cheese and then the chargrilled oysters as an appetizer.
Chargrilled oysters were Amazing! probably some of the best i've tasted. Not much to say about them other than order them and enjoy. I do wish there was some toasted french bread to go with them to sop up the butter and cheese left in the half shell.
Wife had the Cajun pasta and she wasnt feeling it but didnt mention it until the owner came by and asked her about the dish. He immediately took ownership and said that its a work in progress and quickly offered to get her something else. She ultimately settled on the fried chicken, fish with collard greens and red beans and rice... which was all 10/10 on the flava scale!
I had the fish and grits and a small side of mac n cheese -- because I have to test everybody's mac and cheese! First, the mac n cheese was creamy, cheesy and had a hint of heat to it. The grits were properly cooked; creamy with the right amount of cheese. The fish for me was good, but not necessarily hot. The owner took note of this and immediately offered to get me a fresh plate of fish and fresh hot sides. The customer service during this experience was impeccable!
Recommendations: Please toast up some fresh bread to come with those amazing oysters. It would just complement the meal. The cat fish was cut into super skinny strips which can sometimes be challenging with batter to fish ratios. I would love to see a whole filet vs the skinny strips.
Sheesh, thats it -- I got nothing else to say other than it was so refreshing to have a POSITIVE dining experience while supporting black business. I would recommend anyone looking for amazing food and a pleasant and attentive staff to give CuVees a try. ...
Read moreOK, let’s get the positives out-of-the-way, the food is OK, but the actual experience of eating inside the restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. One, we went during brunch and noticed coffee was not on the menu. You only have two non-alcoholic options during brunch, lemonade, and tea. When we asked do they serve coffee, the waitress told us that they needed to see if the coffee machine worked. We proceeded to get very watered down coffee 10 minutes after our meal arrived. When we addressed it with the owner, his response was “I don’t drink coffee, so whatever is in the Keurig is what we have.”. Not everybody plans to day drink at brunch. Some people may actually want coffee, juice or hot tea. Please update your menu with those very common items.
Two, one of my friends ordered pancakes and wings. When the waitress put the plate on the table, one of the wings rolled off. The waitress saw this happen but did not address it and was beginning to walk away, until my friend stopped her and asked for another wing since that one hit the table.
Three, one of our servers appeared somewhat unsightly and had crust in the corners of her mouth. That is not something you want to see when you are dining in a restaurant. The good news is, I feel that all of these issues can be easily addressed and fixed if the owner cares about the feedback. There are a lot of restaurants in Houston and a ton of competition, your game needs to be on point if you...
