I thought that the food was good, and the prices were reasonable considering the current state of hyper-inflation in California in 2025.
The downtown area it is located in is nice. The menu options for dinner didn't really have a theme. They had a couple of Japanese style ahi dishes, tikka masala, mahi mahi, burgers, and meatloaf to name a few.
What could they do better? I would say two things. First, the simple wooden tables and chairs are not the most comfortable, nor do they provide a very warm atmosphere. In this case, 'simple' felt 'cheap' for me. Or 'uncreative'.
My parents were confused about the mural on the wall as well. Is that supposed to be California, or have something to do with the area's history? It's just another nod to the lack of theme. My advice would be to ditch the tikka and the meatloaf, add a slice of pineapple to the burger, and go with a 'Pacific Island' theme, or something.
When discussing going out, I think my companions and I are much more likely to say let's go to that Japanese place, or that Italian place, and so on. Not, oh how about that place that has a lot of different things, but like they have one or two Indian things, a burger option, and um, like some fish.
And, the name Cast Iron Grill kinda makes me think 'steak' focussed. Chicken, sausage, and so on. Not tuna, meatloaf, and tikka masala. Just saying. That's my suggestion, and that's the first criticism.
The second is related to the food itself. I think that the selection of sides was not interesting or exciting, and a little disappointing. And I would say that the mashed potatoes, which I had, were not good.
I enjoyed the meatloaf entree. Fried shoestring onion was a nice touch. But the mashed potatoes sucked. I don't know if they were instant, but I suspect they might have been. Use real potato.
That said, overall it was a good experience. Not a five star experience, but I'd go back. ...

However, on Thanksgiving, I was extremely disappointed. Our usual traditional Thanksgiving dinner with family was called off due to an unforeseen situation. I still wanted to treat my kids to a nice meal. The prices were a lot higher and the quality was a lot lower. And, to add insult to injury, our server (whose name I’m going to leave out) was horrendous. She rarely came by our table; I had to ask another server for bread, which is usually brought out when drinks are served. Our server told me she’d been waiting on bread for a long time, but all the other tables had bread. Groups that were seated after us were all getting their food way before us. When she dropped our food (finally), she asked if everything was good, prior to us even having a bite. Then she never came back to check on us until we were done and waiting for the check. She recommended the scalloped potatoes as a side, raving about how good they were. They were horrible. If she had come back sooner (or even at all before the end of the meal) I would have asked if I could have a side of mashed potatoes instead. I would’ve even paid extra. I was ready to go, disappointed & still hungry. I put out the credit card , showing that I was ready for the bill… eventually she came by, picked it up, and ran it without even giving me the itemized bill. I’m not one to skip out on tipping, regardless… but I only left 15%. Her service was, by far, worth less than that.
This one bad visit won’t keep me from returning. I love their regular menu, the ambiance is great, and the service is usually outstanding. I will steer clear of her section when I go back. I’m actually offended at the lack of service she gave us, and kind of sad that my boys & I didn’t get to enjoy our...
Read moreCame for the Sunday brunch with a friend. Pretty loud atmosphere, but that was expected for a large dining area. We sat down and were handed 4 menus. Our initial wwiter was pretty scattered and spoke really fast, it was terribly difficult to understand him with all the noise. We ordered coffee and bailey's and an Irish coffee and received 2 Irish coffees. Our bread and fruit came after the mimosas. The bread was delicious, however the fruit had been sitting for a while. The watermelon was mush. We received our food and it was pretty delicious.
We were relaxing into our conversation and a waitress walks by and drops a full bottle of A1 sauce right by our table. She quickly apologized. However, the sauce splattered on my face, neck, hair, sweatsuit, shoes, on my friend's shirt and on the table. The glass bottle top flew past our table. It was a bit shocking, really. I asked for a towel for my face, hair and clothes, and was brought a dry towel. I had to ask for it to be wet and they tried to spray a chemical cleaner on it. I then asked the waiter to take away our plates and provide us with new plates since glass had splattered everywhere including across our table. We were VERY understanding, I even stated "accidents happen." The waiter grew irritable and basically called us rude for asking for new plates. The manager came by, brought a warm towel and placed new orders. We were very well taken care of after by our new waiter, but received zero compensation for the fact that my friend's shirt was ruined and I may have to launder my suit and re-wash my hair. (Curly haired folks know the hassle of wash day)
It was...
