The station holds enormous potential for becoming a vital transfer station with the Sonoma Marin Area Rapid Transit (SMART) network. The existing SMART route, extending from Larkspur to Sonoma County Airport, is already a game-changer for public transit in the region. However, there's an exciting opportunity to further enhance connectivity and streamline commuter travel by extending SMART services to key locations along its spur track.
The spur track is located between SMART's Novato Hamilton and Downtown Novato stations, and travels through a host of underserved areas including Schellville near Sonoma, Vallejo, Napa Junction, Rockville, and, lastly, Suisun/Fairfield. By considering the expansion of their services to include stations at these locations, SMART could not only serve significant areas in Napa and Solano counties but also create a seamless travel experience for commuters.
The convenience of hopping on a SMART train in Santa Rosa or Larkspur, smoothly transferring at the Suisun/Fairfield station, and continuing on the Amtrak Capitol Corridor towards Oakland or Sacramento would not only reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, but also provide commuters with an efficient, reliable, and comfortable public transit option.
Residents and visitors in Napa and Solano counties would gain easier access to the broader Bay Area, making it easier to explore job opportunities, enjoy cultural attractions, or simply connect with friends and family. Moreover, this initiative aligns perfectly with our collective responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable transportation alternatives.
In conclusion, the Amtrak Capitol Corridor station at Suisun/Fairfield is poised to become a critical link in the SMART network, opening up new possibilities for seamless travel throughout the region. I wholeheartedly support this visionary idea, and encourage both SMART and Amtrak to collaborate and make this concept a reality. It could be a win-win for commuters, the environment, and the communities it...
Read moreThis is the most unsafe I have ever felt waiting at an Amtrak station during the day. I couldn’t imagine coming here at night. There is a large homeless encampment nearby with mentally ill people who come and go often. One person walked less than a foot from where I was standing just to be intimidating. In the 45 minutes I had to wait here, it was a harrowing experience.
Please use the nearby Fairfield-Vacaville station if you can! That station is pleasant, well lit,...
Read moreThis is a lovely historic station. However, in the past year or so there is a large homeless camp which has developed and the area has begun to feel more dangerous with some scary encounters. I have not seen any police in the area and the city employees we have spoken to have not been helpful. While I like this station, I think leaving from the Fairfield Vacaville station might be a good idea for now. Hopefully the city can...
