This was my second time here and this time it was a bit of an unusual experience. I will preface by saying my server, Rachel was nice and gave substantial service so I’m not giving a low rating, just an honest one.
We came with my mother in law and husband and quickly greeted by someone who wasn’t our server. It seemed to have taken a bit longer to be greeted by our actual server. When she did come, I notified our server that my husband has celiac and what GF options they had and specifically the sides they offered. She responded “I know we have a Vegan bowl…” and didn’t seem confident on what options they had but she said she would go ask the kitchen.
It was a little concerning for me because it was clear that she didn’t quite know what Gluten free or celiac meant. Working in food and beverage I think it’s vital to train your staff to know the major allergies and what they are for food safety purposes.
Mind you, since the moment we came in I noticed a tall gentleman in what looked like a chef coat kinda hanging around the bar and talking with other guests. However, I wasn’t sure who of what his role was but I did not see her ask him.
When she returned she said that they said the only thing they think is GF is the side salad.
So without taking any risks, my husband decided to get just bacon and eggs to be safe. I got a half order of French toast with my eggs and meat plate, and my mother in law enjoyed her French toast. It was a very standard and straightforward meal. Everything tasted good for the most part. Just sucked that my husband didn’t eat very much.
When Rachel came back I asked her “is that the chef right there?” I’m referring to the tall guy with the grey chef coat. She said “yes, he kinda does a little of everything around here." In my head I'm wondering, why she didn’t think to ask him about the GF options if he’s the head chef. Or that he may not even know what being celiac actually means.
So I wouldn’t say we had a bad experience, but with my husband being celiac and going to places where wait staff aren’t trained properly on food allergies can be off putting. They should know what GF is, no wheat and flour. Give your staff some options or maybe even a cheat sheet of what they could present to guests when they have allergies. Just a suggestion coming from someone who currently manages a restaurant because you could ruin someone’s experience or make...
Read moreThis was a very fun restaurant to visit. It pushes just about all my right buttons when it comes to small locally owned establishments. His location is in the middle of the pedestrian area of town. It has a decent size parking lot that's easily accessible. The menu is chock full of familiar items with imaginative twists. They offered me a breakfast menu as well as a lunch menuand it was 3:00 p.m.! The restaurant was clean and bright with fun music playing. Best of all service was very very good. They have a neat outside area which would be wonderful in the evenings and TVs placed where they would be appreciated, and view line of the bars but not distracting for people sitting at tables. I do wish they had a larger bathroom although maybe there was another that I missed somewhere. The food was excellent except for a sheep crab soup which came out totally broken, more of a ding on service than the kitchen as a server should notice these things but she was excellent otherwise. We pointed it out and it was replaced with a much better version. I have been craving a patty melt for weeks for some reason and they had one on the menu with caramelized onions, one or all of three cheeses and my favorite patty melt bread which is a swirled pumpernickel and rye. I asked for crispy fries and, holy cow, they were actually crispy. The fried green tomatoes are probably the best I've had with a thick but crunchy neutral batter and just perfect ripeness that gave a zing to the tomato. Being in South Carolina I expected the sweet tea to be good and this tea was excellent, light and sweet not syrupy. If you're not from South Carolina you probably won't understand the importance of this. And she brought a carafe of it to the table so we did not have to wait for refills. A delightful restaurant find in a delightful town. Can't wait...
Read moreOut early looking for a good breakfast place in the area. I usually go to another breakfast spot close by but breakfast was over. It was a little after 11.
The restaurant had just opened. I tried the front and door it was locked. There was a sign on the side of the building that indicated that the entrance was on the side. Walked in, 3 people behind bar looked said nothing and walked to the back. I thought that maybe they had not seen me or the restaurant may still be closed so I left and came back 10 mins later.
After being seated, I ordered a coffee. Asked for cream and sugar. the young lady did not come back. I asked a different person. I could see her in the restaurant, but she didn’t come back either. The person that bought out my meal was nice enough to get cream and sugar. At that point, it was not as hot as I wanted it to be.
I ordered the shrimp & grits with bacon and a croissant as my meal. The shrimp was tough. I didn’t taste ANY seasoning. Reminded me of shrimp directly out of a bag. The gravy on top of the grits was seasoned and tasty. The croissant was good. The bacon was dry . Reminded me of the times I cook bacon in the oven too long.
Clean lots of space for groups. 2 separate sections outside Of outdoor covered seating.
If eating here I would park at the parking lot at the corner facing Main street.
Sweetwater 123 has its own parking .
There is also street parking nearby but not a lot of spaces. A parking structure is across the street.
I did not feel welcome here. Not coming back. I should have paid attention to my intuition, how I was treated, and...
