The 2 or 3 times I have been to Penny Ann's Cafe in Taylorsville, the wait time has been moderately annoying. Today I decided to get up early and try it out.
My review of the "Heavenly Hotcakes" is below if you're not interested in the rest of the dining "experience"
We arrived at 7:02am and were seated almost immediately... great start. Our server came to take our drink order within a few minutes... good. When our coffee came out it was in good sized (12oz) but chipped (not sharp, just a little shabby) mugs. I found out the hard way that the creamers were all sticky. Off to the men's room for the hand washing! The bathroom floor was as sticky as the floors of a "cheap" movie theater. I stuck to the floor all the way back to my table. No harm done since sticky floors ultimately have no bearing on the taste of the food. When the food arrived 15 to 20 minutes later it was hot and our orders were correct. Somewhere between ordering my omelet and delivery of said omelet, I decided I wanted a side of bacon. The server had no problem adding it to my order and surprisingly brought me an order of bacon within a minute! Unfortunately, it was cold... don't get me wrong... it was still bacon but it was room temperature when it reached the table. The quality of my meal was serviceable but ultimately disappointing. The omelet was correct and had all of the advertised ingredients. There was even plenty of filling but it was not distributed very well throughout and the eggs lacked flavor. The bacon, as I said, was cold but it was also inconsistent. Some was cooked fine but some was literally burnt... and that was all in one slice! The "Country potatoes" were cooked well and weren't greasy but also lacked any sort of spices or flavor. Now to the main event:
The "Heavenly Hotcakes" TLDR: Meh. The "Heavenly Hotcakes" were a severe letdown for all the hype. The flavor was fine. They were neither undercooked and doughy nor were they overcooked and rubbery. They were, however, a terrible texture. Like a cross between tapioca and kitchen sponge. It was VERY reminiscent of vegan cakes I had in the 90s... before most vegans knew what they were doing.
In summation. It was fine, edible, not the best or worst I've ever had but if you're waiting for more than 20 minutes for a table... you may as well...
Read moreThis is my 2nd time coming in and I don't know that I will ever come back. My first experience was nothing bad, but nothing special. Food was good so came in on 9/27 for what I imagined a quick breakfast with my husband. Wait wasn't long, about 15 minutes until we sat at the bar, from there, the whole experience went downhill. Got started with a water and coffee for us and placed our order. 2 egg breakfast and a parfait with a side of french toast and bacon. While we waited we watched people getting sat way after us (2 couples also at the bar) receive their food and watched the staff bicker the entire time. We waited patiently watching for about an hour before we decided that we should just leave and continue on with our day. In that hour, we didn't see our waitress ask the cooks about our food once even though she walked past us at least 10 times. Once we finally spoke up and asked for our food to go because we had other things to do they had our order boxed up and ready to go within 4 minutes. After we arrived home we realized they didn't even give us our hot cakes and our food was cold. Honestly wish we would have just left instead of taking the food to go. The waitress did give us a 20% discount without us having to ask which was appreciated but honestly, $4 off doesn't mean much to me, and isn't enough to make me choose coming here again over another breakfast place. I like supporting local businesses but until this place can handle the crowds it pulls in, I'll continue going to Original Pancake House because the breakfast there is just as good, just as reasonably priced, but they can actually run efficiently and it's clear that is why they could become a chain. I've visited many small/local restaurants run more effectively in larger towns with...

There is a waiting area with seating, which is good for their busy times no doubt. Plenty of room around tables to navigate to be seated, and there are several booths as well. Clean dining area. Did not check out bathrooms this visit. Overall nice ambiance. Open and light but not too bright. Friendly and space-respecting server. Nicely clear menu and lots of tasty offerings. We got the pot of gold and the chicken fried steak dishes with perfectly cooked over medium eggs. Love their style of vibes potatoes, very tasty. Pot of gold has a great mix of flavors but it is a lot of the same, so after so many bites it's good to take a break into the heavenly hot cakes. They are quite good! Somewhat eggy but still not too dense and really delicious and filling! And the chicken fried steak description in the menu was a little unique (bread crumbs and Parmesan) so I asked if it was still like a "traditional" diner chicken fried steak and the server didn't seem too confident about a comparison, but I went for it and I would say it isn't exactly traditional, but luckily it was in a better direction! The meat itself that was in the crispy breading was super tasty and the sausage gravy was a delight! Not too heavy or salty. It all worked together so well! I managed to fill up, saving half of everything for later and usually I wait to review until I've seen how leftovers come out, but we just loved our meal a lot so why wait! Super pleased with our selections this time and don't doubt anything else we'd choose would be great. Coke products. Big portions. Two of us, no drinks: $25.96 (tip on...
