It's been a minute since I've let myself indulge in Korean fried chicken, but I've been hearing about Peck Peck since I moved to the area. Every time someone sang its praises, I had to wonder, 'Really? The best fried chicken comes out of THAT space?' Because every time I passed by it, it looked quiet or closed or both.
But don't let appearances fool you. It's very, very good.
To get straight to it, the wings are the way to go here. I ordered both the wings and the boneless tenders to give this place the old college try, and while the tenders are impressive in size and heft (and I personally like them because I don't have to work around a bone), I found the wings to be far more tender and flavorful. I also found that the tenders were far quicker to lose their fried crunchification. I also tried both the soy garlic and sweet and spicy flavors, and both are incredible. If you put a gun to my head and made me choose one, I'd have to pick the soy garlic, but I love the way these sauces aren't lathered onto each piece. There's just enough brushed on so that you can appreciate both the flavor and the texture of the chicken.
The fries here are the wedge type. Think KFC, but fresher and less salty. Also, don't sleep on the pickled veg. I know it sounds nuts to buy pickled veggies from a fried chicken place, but it's a staple for classic Korean fried chicken dinners to cleanse the greasy palate with something acidic. I love the medley of veg they use here, and I loved the pickling juice so much, I actually found myself sipping it between bites (don't judge me).
There's a small parking lot on the side of the building that might accommodate three or four cars at most. And that might be by design, because three or four parties is probably the most that could dine in this tiny restaurant. But as many have already shared, the owners here are so sweet and friendly, it's a gift to spend any amount of time with them, even in this teacup-sized dining room. Those who choose to takeout or deliver will be pleased to know that Peck Peck Chicken knows how to to package freshly fried things correctly - that is, with intentionally aerated containers so that you won't lose all that beautiful crisp as the food makes...
Read moreThis place is not supposed to be popular. It's a mom and pop version of much more snazzier versions that exist in Pal Park, Fort Lee and elsewhere. They did not expect that the Teaneck, Bogota area crowd who would never go to Boom Boom Chicken and have no idea that Korean chicken even exists would end up loving this place. What you got was the old couple who originally opened this place literally frying and refrying the chicken and then painting on the sauce and then orderly laying the chicken pieces in the container box ON ORDER. They used to then ask you if wanted a sample of the chicken while you waited. This is why some people complain about the wait but I think it's a good thing that you get to order chicken that requires waiting bc they're actually cooking it for you. The original owners are not chefs, nor super astute business owners. They just make honest, earnest, real food hoping to stay in the green. The older couple is not there anymore and I think their son runs this place with employees. The service is faster now but it's certainly not fast. The store is pretty bare bones. They have tables but this place is really a take out place. If you want the Kpop versions where they serve you beer and the chicken gets a lot fancier, trek over to Pal Park, Fort Lee. You can google them. Peck Peck let's you pick up some high quality wings in that you can get in your sweatpants. And that's a bump in quality of life for the area...
Read moreUPDATE - took me a while but I returned to this restaurant, and the food was one of the better KFCs (Korean Fried Chicken) I’ve had. Salt&pepper wings must have crack as secret ingredient because it is addictive. Good Job!
"Somebody just legit stole your food!" said the guy at the counter, as I went up to pick up my order. I was absolutely floored. It was 20 minutes before they closed, and I had waited nearly 45 minutes, drove nearly 10 miles, and there were hungry people at home. "Gimme 25 minutes and I'll remake your order" he continued. I asked how food gets stolen from a takeout place, but apparently, here at Peck Peck, it's very possible, and in my case, did happen. When I ran a restaurant in Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia for 3 years, no food ever got stolen. Very nice, guy at the counter. Lie to me more, why don't you? After you just wasted my time and gas, leaving me hanging. I wanted to curse and rant, but I didn't. I simply asked, "how does something like that happen?" and the guy at the counter became offended and started raising his voice at me. I just shook my head and left. No apology for handing out my order to someone who had a similar name as mine and lying through his teeth. I'm sure the food is great. I just wouldn't know. Popeye's, however, came through and saved the day. When I calm down, I will give this place another chance and update my review, since I absolutely hate giving 1-star to any...
