Solid service and unique tacos!
It's gotta be tough breaking into a taco market dominated by torchy and velvety competitors, but Lonestar Taco managed to deliver a unique experience that I think will help it carve out its niche here in the Woodlands.
I tried three tacos: The Vaquero, The Maverick, and the Carol Burnette. Here's my take on each, though your mileage may vary.
The Vaquero: This was a classic fajita taco. These can be tricky due to the tough nature of fajita meat but this was easily my favorite of the three. An all around solid taco with warm freshly grilled steak and peppers topped with cool lettuce, cheese, and pico. Eat this one first, before everything evens out to the same temperature and you'll have yourself a solid classic taco. A++
The Maverick: This is the taco equivalent of a po-boy. Which might be the best take on the po-boy, a sandwich that normally hides its flavor under six inches of baguette. However Longhorn Taco, please, please please do the panko crusted tilapia justice because mine was rock-hard, and way overcooked, to the point of being unpleasant. I took off a star for this single taco, but I love the concept and definitely want to give it a second chance. C- (with a chance for extra credit)
The Carol Burnette: Where the Vaquero was a refreshing bite of heterogeneity, this taco had a much different philosophy. The beans queso and shredded steak were all blended together to create a single scoop of delicious creamy filling I really enjoyed. However the only companion was a slice of also creamy avocado. It felt like I stole a ladleful of the best dip at a party and hid it in a tortilla. IMO, this taco would really benefit from a tiny bit of crunch - lettuce, cabbage, something that would make it feel more like a full meal in a tortilla and less like a delicious party foul. A+ (but it should socialize a bit more)
Regardless of what I think, any place whose food can inspire me to stop and can get me to pen a whole essay is worth...
Read moreI will start by saying that the food is excellent. I haven't had anything there that I did not like. With that said, the service is horrible. While ordering, we asked for ground beef tacos for the kids and a side of ranch for them to dip their chips in (they refuse to eat queso for some reason). The kid ringing me up failed to advise us they did not have either. We discovered this only after we payed and sat down.
After sitting there for a while, I looked over to observe our order of food sitting on a tray unattended. I waited several minutes for the server to bring it to me as I did not wish to be rude and interrupt her text conversation. Once it was determined she was not going to set her phone down and bring the tray of food over from the heat lamp in the kitchen (which I saw her do with a couple other tables) I made the command decision to retrieve my tray of food.
I was only slightly irritated at this point. Then enter the friends of the teenagers who were working there. They were loud, and causing the young waitress to perform even less work than she had been as well as occupying the young guy who was working the register. All in all, it appears to be bad business practice to let teenagers run the place without some proper management.
Kudos should be given to the ladies in the kitchen. They were hard at work slaving away making some excellent tacos and dealing with the immaturity of the kids on the other side of...
Read moreThis place is an utter joke. My family of 5 was hungry for breakfast tacos this morning so we Googled Texas Taco Co.to get their operating hours. Google had 6am. It was around 7am so we headed up to the restaurant. The restaurant was closed upon arrival. I looked on the door for their hours and to my surprise they have 3 different hours of operation listed in 3 different places around the front door. 6:30, 7, and 8. We came back home and I decided I would just pick up the order to go. I went back around 8:05. When I arrived there were 5 other cars FULL of people waiting for the restaurant to open. I finally called the restaurant around 8:15. After about 12 rings someone finally answered. I asked if they were going to open any time soon. The guy replied "Yeah, in about 30 minutes, sorry" Delightfully I informed everyone that they weren't opening anytime soon, we ALL left. If the owner was on site at the time he deserves to go out of business, if not, he needs to FIRE his ENTIRE staff for being lazy, incompetent, costing him about $150.00, and for wasting our time this morning. I will never again attempt to patronize this place....odds are it wont be open. 01/27/18 - 9:38 am doors locked. Cook inside, won't come...
