Made it over to Southern Maid Donuts (3440 Riley Fuzzel Rd, Spring, TX 77386) this morning to try the huge breakfast tacos that I have read about. Compared to other breakfast tacos in the area, it is definitely larger and heftier. It’s about 6.5” long and 1.5” round. It’s basically a small breakfast burrito in terms of size.
I tried the potato, sausage, egg, and cheese cheese taco. The tortilla does not seem to be made in-house, so I am always a bit disappointed when I see those. The eggs were light and fluffy which was a bit surprising. Most if not all the breakfast tacos that I have tried recently have the eggs a bit over cooked, so it’s uncommin to find them light and fluffy. The breakfast sausage used is a bit different. It lacked the distinct flavor of breakfast sausages that you get from anywhere really such as fast food chains or even the grocery stores. Maybe it’s made in-house. It’s not terrible, just unexpected. The potatoes were cooked all the way through but not crispy on the outside. I feel like potatoes in a breakfast taco need to be crispy. Yes, I understand that crispy potatoes lose that crisp crunch after being wrapped in the rest of the ingredients, but for whatever the reason, it makes the taco more delicious for me.
The staff is great. Very pleasant to work with and even mentioned the free donut deal. I also love how clean the restaurant appeared. It’s always comforting to see a clean establishment.
The 3 item kolaches in the display look huge! I may try them next time. I am curious if it mainly bread or filling.
The tacos are $3.49, so you will be paying about $3.79 after tax. It’s priced higher than other breakfast taco offerings in the area, but it’s also a lot bigger. Overall, it’s a decent taco. I am not sure if you can eat two, but you...
Read moreWe have gone here multiple times, our experience is always similar but the kids like going since they have sprinkle doughnut holes. This morning we went inside to get breakfast- these are some of the rudest service women I have encountered. Not polite at all, no general greeting, straight face with no positive inclination or care, literally “what do you want?”… yikes.
This biggest issue I had this morning was noticing a doordasher/uber eats employee was picking a food (for Lauren, I believe). He was behind us in line and looking at the menu. A third woman walked up behind the counter and asked him what he wanted, no “excuse me, sir” or “I can take the next person in line” etc. she had the most awful expression, clearly didn’t want to be bothered.
He approached the counter when he heard her the second time and said he was picking up an order for Lauren. They had no idea what he was talking about. He showed them his phone with the order- she rolled her eyes and started getting the order ready.
Wow. He was clearly taken back by this reaction, I’m not sure what I would have said in this situation since he is also working and probably didn’t want to risk the order not being completed since that’s his income.
This place needs an overhaul. Terrible employees. Signs on the walls with items not offered, floor is slippery with grime from the lack of cleaning, tables are dirty and too sticky to sit at....
Read moreDrive thru is convenient, but how in the world do you mess up a donut order??? And it wasn’t like it was a big complicated order. Half dozen: 2 cream-filled, 1 strawberry filled, 2 chocolate with sprinkles, and 1 glazed. I came home to find 1 cream filled, 2 strawberry filled, 2 chocolate with no sprinkles, and 1 glazed. Like...seriously?!?! It’s not rocket science! Decided to give them another shot because maybe it was an off day or something. Ordered a half dozen: 2 cream filled, 1 Bavarian filled, 2 chocolate with sprinkles and 1 glazed. Came home to find 2 Bavarian filled, 1 chocolate with frosting, 1 vanilla frosting, and 1 glazed....and ONE missing donut!!!....the cream filled, which is the one donut I really wanted! The drive thru is the only benefit this place has going for them, especially when you have a couple of kids in your car. Donuts...
