This is a 5* diner that hasn't stepped back and figured out how to get there. It used to be family run and operated from what I could tell and now the counter is run by youths without much passion. They got right what many restaurants never achieve: great food. Consistently great. 1 out of 10 times I consider going there or ordering takeout do I actually follow through. Up until 2016 if you wanted to eat their food some planning was required. They make it fresh, so you have to wait. Whether you dine in or attempt to endure their painfully short drive-through lane, it's going to take awhile. They NEVER figured out how to make the drive-through efficient. It started out bad, then their marquee order spot stopped working, so you had to wait to get to the window to order then they had to wait on you to move before they could take the next order. Madness. 10 orders could be working in the time it take them to get through 2 cars not because of the food prep time, but because of their process. The answer? Call ahead right? No. Lately if they answer the phone at all, it will be busy like they left it off the hook. I was willing to overlook the occasional botched order (details from the ordering process not like omissions or getting someone else's order). Inside, it seems like they fixed the overheating problem coming from the kitchen and possibly their position in the building from (go-figure sunrise). It also seems they fixed their grease trap or plumbing that caused a regular odor to grace your dine-in experience. Look, they've been in our community for many years. Good Mexican food that is close and tasty is usually ruined by their choice of tortilla (torchies) or house salsa (every other place). Sunrise had none of those issues. They even stored their salsa in a refrigerator which says we care about food born illness. They never figured out how to capitalize on what is special about this place like getting all that business they turned away because people weren't will to wait longer than they should have. Today I say to them: find a way to bring back call-ahead ordering or placing your order by app or I have to say adios forever and recommend they same to others.
Update: we’ve been coming back more often. Still great food and they’ve made it clear they are listening to the community and making improvements. One time the building looked closed down and we got sad. It’s the kind of place your root for. Keep the improvements coming +1 star.
Update Halloween Covid19 Before the pandemic and right when it started we supported TS and they had made many improvements until I broke with my routine as the hung up on my first call so I went inside. Cashier friendly and professional, then I see the problems: older gent which may have been the owner reaching into his mask to pull it down so he could call someone’s number then pulled it back up under his nose from the inside before touching all the ready orders. I was going to overlook that, but then I saw the effect on the workers. Only one young lady was using typical procedures for food safety (probably trained elsewhere) but the main lady prepping the food and bagging orders had her mask completely down, continually wiping her nose, reaching across to stir the beans, then with that same hand, rolling up the tacos and bagging them. If she had any transmittable illness, she was contaminating the entire food line. Otherwise trace mucus on my food is just gross. I can see the training is just not there for food safety, and except for those employees who are uncompromising about their standards, the rest do as they want. I believe that is why the service was so inconsistent in the past. I really wanted the place to rise to their potential, but I would have given another place this many...
Read moreThis was my very 1st time visiting this restaurant and my overall experience was not that great. I googled them this morning to check what time they open (Sunday at 8am) and what was on their menu and of course there menu pricing. When I got there at 7:55am I waited at the door til it was time to open well it was 8:05am and I was still waiting at the front door getting a little frustrated I did see the people standing working at the counter and finally they came and open the door. I placed my order to go and as she was ringing up my order I noticed that she was over charging me I asked her about that and she told me that the prices were correct so when I pulled up their website and showed her the pricing on their website she told me that The owner is always changing the prices at the restaurant but never changes them on their website I then told the cashier that it was not my fault And that they should honor the pricing that they have posted on their website. Of course she told me no they were not able to do that so I pay for my items and told them that I was going to post this on their website to let other people know. Attached is a copy of both the restaurant menu and c copy of my ...
Read moreOk... I'm always giving opportunity for a restaurant to redeem themselves... so I thought we do a drive thru.. #1, prices on the web does note match prices at drive thru menu (from $7.00 to $9.00), 2) drive thru menu prices do not match the charged price at the order window ($9.00 to $14.00),.. and don't bother arguing with the cashier, either pay or move in.. can I say "False Advertisement" ..? 3) wait time was long.. I ordered 1 dozen tamales and 2 large menudo... simple I would think.. but 15-20 mins later, we finally got our order..., The food; menudo was a little salty and very spicy as in chilli powder.. tripe was spot on . But this menudo is not for beginners who are subject to high heat.. spicy complaints came from all around the table... The tamales we're good... content was a little dry but good overall. Due to recent restaurant closures and new start up's learning how to make menudo, this location is currently the best flavor in the area... but, beware of constant price increases... Just...
